(LEBANON, Ill., September 22)- The McKendree University men's soccer team needed more than 90 minutes on Thursday night to earn a 3-2 win over Oakland City University in double overtime.
The Bearcats improved to 8-0 overall and will travel to Clinton, Iowa on Sunday, September 25 to play Ashford University at 3:00 p.m.
Senior midfielder
Tom Ward (Frodhsam, England) put McKendree on the board in the 15th minute by sending his corner kick past the Mighty Oaks keeper untouched to take a 1-0 lead. Oakland CIty rebounded and scored on a goal by Nick Little in the the 27th minute and the game was knotted up 1-1 at the half.
Little played his part in another goal in the contest and picked up an assist in the 83rd minute on a goal by Aljosa Stankovic to give the Mighty Oaks a 2-1 lead with less that seven minutes to play in regulation. A handball by Oakland City in the box gave the Bearcats a penalty kick in the 86th minute, and after senior defender
Sam James' (Southampton. England, Tauntons) initial attempt was waved off due to a player coming off the line, James beat the keeper to the left side on his second attempt to tie the game 2-2.
Both teams took two shots in the first overtime period, but neither found the back of the net to force the game into a second and final overtime period. The Bearcats wasted little time in the second overtime and freshman forward
Anthony Grant (Kingston, Jamaica, Jamaica College) ended the game with a game-winning goal 24-seconds into the 100th minute to end the game and give the Bearcats a nail-biting 3-2 win.
Senior goalkeeper
Joe Sagar (Oldham, England/Hulme) played the entire contest in goal and had one save, while improving to 8-0 on the season.
