Box Score
(CLINTON, Iowa, September 25)- Senior midfielder
Tom Ward (Frodhsam, England) scored four goals on Sunday in a 5-2 route over Ashford University.
The Bearcats improved to 9-0 on the season and will travel to Springfield, Ill., on Monday, September 26th for a match at Benedictine University-Springfield at 3 p.m.
McKendree's ninth consecutive win matches the hot start of the 2009 team who started with a record of 9-0-1, and a win on Monday would match the 2008 team's 10-0-1 start.
The Bearcats found themselves trailing just over nine minutes into the game when a corner kick by the Saints' Eduardo Cruz was put in the net by Lucas Almeida. McKendree responded and tied the game 1-1 on Ward's first goal of the game, a chip shot over the Ashford goalkeeper, in the 27th minute. Ward gave the Bearcats a 2-1 lead off a free kick 10 minutes later, only for the Saints to knot the game 2-2 just before halftime in the 43rd minute.
Ward continued to give the Ashford defense fits in the second half, scoring off another free kick in the 62nd minute to give McKendree a 3-2 lead, and scoring again in the 73rd minute off an assist by freshman forward
Anthony Grant (Kingston, Jamaica, Jamaica College) to give McKendree a two-goal lead, 4-2. Junior midfielder/forward
Mike Williams (Headcorn, England/Norton Knatchbull) added a goal for good measure in the 87th minute off an assist by senior midfielder
Kameron Young (Mascoutah, Ill., Mascoutah) to secure the 5-2 victory.
Senior goalkeeper
Joe Sagar (Oldham, England, Hulme) improved to 9-0 overall and had four saves in the win.
