BEARCAT VOLLEYBALL TEAM DEFEATED IN ROAD MATCH AT MISSOURI S & T

(ROLLA, Mo., Sept. 17)—
Playing in its 10th consecutive road match, the McKendree University volleyball team dropped a four-set decision Wednesday at Missouri University of Science and Technology. The host Miners took the contest by scores of 25-13, 21-25, 25-18 and 25-16.
 
The Bearcats drop to 4-12 on the season with Wednesday's loss. McKendree will wrap up its 14-match road trip this weekend with four games at the Lindenwood University Invitational in St. Charles, Mo. The Bearcats will play twice on Friday, taking on Evangel University at 5 p.m. before meeting up with the University of St. Francis (Ill.) in a 7 p.m. contest.
 
At Missouri S & T, senior outside hitter Kaitlyn Kollmann (Collinsville, IL/Metro East Lutheran) (Collinsville, Ill./Metro East Lutheran) paced the McKendree attack with 12 kills. Maknig her first varsity appearance of the season, freshman outside hitter/defensive specialist Erica Johnson (New Baden, IL/Wesclin) (New Baden, Ill./Wesclin) chipped in with nine attacks and 10 digs. Senior hitter Melinda Bayer (Collinsville, IL/Triad) (Collinsville, Ill./Triad) registered a match-high seven blocks, including six assisted.
 
Senior setter Melissa Bayer (Collinsville, IL/Triad) (Collinsville, Ill./Triad) handed out 22 assists and posted a team-best 15 digs.
 
After dropping the first set, McKendree roared back to even the contest at a set apiece. The Bearcats edged out to an early lead in the set before a 5-2 run gave McKendree a 16-9 advantage. A kill by Johnson and a setting error from the Miners eventually pushed the Bearcats out to their largest lead of the set at 18-10.
 
Missouri S & T rallied to cut the deficit to 23-21, but consecutive kills by Johnson and Kollmann put the set away for the Bearcats. The Miners then pulled away in the middle stages of the third set to grab a 2-1 lead in the match, then rolled to a 13-6 start in the fourth and final set to post the victory.
 
Erin Bekebrede collected a match-high 21 kills for Missouri S & T, which improved to 11-3 with the victory. Jennifer Costello dished out 51 assists in the effort for the Miners.
