Ashley Agee (Moberly, Mo./Moberly) scored 21 points, including a career-high 15-of-17 effort from the free throw line, to lead the McKendree University women's basketball team to a 73-66 win over Missouri Baptist University.
The win snapped a 13-game losing streak for the Bearcats and helped them improve to 7-15 overall this season. McKendree will travel to Rolla, Mo., on Tuesday, February 7th to face Missouri S&T at 7 p.m.
Agee's season-high 21 points led all players in the victory, while her 15 made free throws was the most by a McKendree player this season. Sophomore guard
Brittany Willis (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South) and freshman guard
Caty Ponce (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) also scored in double-figures with 19 and 17 points, respectively.
A layup by Ponce put the Bearcats in the lead 6-2 in the opening minutes, but the Spartans responded with a three-pointer by Janelle Hensold on the next possession to cut the lead to 6-5. McKendree held onto its slim lead and led 16-12 with 9:55 left in the first half until three-pointer's by Lauren Taylor and Andrea Seabaugh jump-started a 10-0 run by Missouri Baptist to give them a 22-16 lead with 5:38 left in the half. The Bearcats came within one twice down the stretch, but trailed 31-28 at the break.
Two free throws by Agee gave McKendree a 39-38 lead at the 14:51 mark in the second half, and the Bearcats would not trail through the remainder of the game. A jumper by Willis with 4:29 left in the half gave McKendree its largest lead of the contest, 64-53, only for the Spartans to battle back within four, 68-64, with under a minute to play. The Bearcats converted 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to seal the 73-66 win.
