Ridsdale's Penalty Kick in 94th Minute Lifts Bearcats To 3-2 Overtime Win At No. 21 William Jewell

Box Score (LIBERTY, Mo., Oct. 14)- A converted penalty kick by freshman forward Alex Ridsdale (Nelson, New Zealand/Mount Albert) in the 94th minute proved to be the difference for the McKendree University men's soccer team in a 3-2 win at No. 21 William Jewell College on Sunday.

The Bearcats improved to 8-6 overall and 6-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference following the win, and will host University of Southern Indiana at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, October 19, before traveling to Owensboro, Ky., to face Kentucky Wesleyan College on Sunday, Oct. 21 at Noon.

The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute on a header by Shane Bowlen on an assist by Sam Braverman.

Freshman forward Joshua Fawssett (Lewes, Sussex, England/Sussex Downs College) scored his first collegiate goal in the 30th minute off a long cross from junior defender Joe Hilderbrand (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney). The goal would be the last of the half and the teams headed into the break tied 1-1.

McKendree wasted little time out of the break and took a 2-1 lead on freshman forward Eddie Wilding (Felixstowe, Sussex, England/Doncaster College)'s team-high sixth goal of the season. Sophomore forward C.J. Cerna (Collinsville, Ill./Collinsville) picked up his third assist of the season on Wilding's goal.

William Jewell struck again in the 66th minute and tied the match, 2-2, on a goal by Chris Binns.

Wth 20 seconds remaining, the Bearcats came inches from ending the game in regulation, but a shot by Cerna was wide and the game was sent to overtime.

In the 94th minute, the Cardinals committed a foul in the box and McKendree was awarded a penalty kick. Ridsdale earned the try and converted the attempt to lead the Bearcats to the upset win.

Freshman Matt Derrington (St. Louis, Mo./Trinity Catholic) improved to 4-1 overall this season and grabbed three saves in the victory.

The come-from-behind win was McKendree's second of the season. The previous was in a 3-2 win over Davenport University (Mich.) back on September 3 in the second game of the year. The Bearcats are 2-6 when not scoring first this season.
