Box Score (LEBANON, Ill., Oct. 19)- The McKendree University men's soccer team couldn't overcome a one-goal halftime deficit and lost to University of Southern Indiana on Friday night 4-2.
The Bearcats fall to 8-7 overall and 6-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with the loss, and will travel to Owensboro, Ky., on Sunday, October 21 at 12 p.m., to face Kentucky Wesleyan College.
It was a fast-paced first half, with both teams combining for five goals in the first 45 minutes of play. The Screaming Eagles struck first on a goal by Jeffrey McClure in the eighth minute on a double-assist by Austin Andrekus and Kevin Minor.
A goal on a free kick by freshman forward
Eddie Wilding (Felixstowe, Sussex, England/Doncaster College) in the 26th minute tied the game, 1-1, only for Southern Indiana to regain the lead, 2-1, on McClure's second goal of the game in the 28th minute. The Screaming Eagles then extended their lead to 3-1 in the 40th minute on a goal by Miles Durham.
Freshman forward
Alex Ridsdale (Nelson, New Zealand/Mount Albert) scored on a penalty kick in the 43rd minute, and the Bearcats went to the locker room at the break only trailing 3-2.
It remained a one-goal match for the majority of the second half, until Carlos Mayser scored in the 71st minute to give Southern Indiana a 4-2 lead. The Bearcats outshot the visitors in the second half, 9-8, but couldn't capitalize and fell 4-2.
Freshman goalkeeper
Matt Derrington (St. Louis, Mo./Trinity Catholic) fell to 4-2 overall and had a career-high seven saves in the loss.
