(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Dec. 16)- The McKendree University wrestling team had four individuals earn top eight finishes to help lead them to a 10th place at the two-day Midwest Classic in Indianapolis, Ind., on December 15-16.

The Bearcats will not compete again until Tuesday, January 15th when they host Lindenwood University in a dual match starting at 7 p.m.

Sophomore heavyweight Ross Janney (Daleville, Ind./Yorktown) was McKendree's top finisher with a third place finish at heavyweight with a 5-1 record. Janney lost a 3-1 decision in the first sudden victory period to Andrew Tumlin of University of Findlay in the championship semifinals, but bounced back with two victories in the consolation bracket. Janney defeated Chris Giddens Jr., of University of North Carolina-Pembroke, 3-1, in the first sudden victory period to claim third place.

Sophomore Nick Haferkamp (Lincoln, Ill./Lincoln Community) earned a fourth place finish at 165 pounds with a 4-2 record. Haferkamp lost an 11-8 decision to Wade Gobin of Upper Iowa University in the championship semifinals, and was defeated by decision, 8-5, in the third place match by Blake Ridenour of Newberry College to finish in fourth place.

Sophomore Julian Smith (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) posted a 4-2 record at 197 pounds to also finish in fourth place. Smith was pinned by NCAA DII No. 3 Carl Broghammer of Upper Iowa in the championship semifinals, and lost a 7-2 decision to NCAA DII No. 1 Joe Brandt in the third place match to finish in fourth place.

Sophomore Luis Alba (Kissimmee, Fla./Cypress Creek) lost a 4-1 decision in the second round to NCAA DII No. 3 Travis Sheehy of Newberry, but rattled off three straight wins, including pinning NCAA DII No. Matt Littleton of West Liberty University, to reach the consolation quarterfinals. A 9-2 decision loss to Tanner Martin sent Alba to the seventh place match, where he defeated Blake Sorenson of Upper Iowa by decision, 6-3, to earn the seventh place finish.
