BOX SCORE

(ST. LOUIS, Mo., May 2)—
Despite posting a 12-hit attack on Wednesday, the McKendree University baseball team was defeated on the road at the University of Missouri-St. Louis by a score of 13-2.

The Bearcats built a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, but the host Tritons rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth, then added nine runs in the eighth inning to put the contest out of reach. McKendree slips to 14-29 on the season with the loss, and will close out its 2012 season on Thursday at Lindenwood University. At 3 p.m., the Bearcats and Lions will complete a game that was suspended on Saturday due to the strong storms that rolled through the Metro East area. McKendree trailed 6-0 in the bottom of the third inning of that contest.

Following the completion of the suspended game, McKendree and Lindenwood will square off for a seven-inning contest that will serve as the Bearcats' season finale.

At UMSL, four different McKendree players had at least two hits in the contest as the Bearcats collected 12 safeties on the day. Seniors Ronnie Calvird (Farmington, MO/Park Hills Central), Brandyn Snider (Fielden, IL/Jersey Community) and Brandon Gargus (Manchester, MO/Parkway South) each collected a pair of hits, as did sophomore outfielder Tony Kossina (Millstadt, IL/Belleville West). Snider and freshman infielder Jacob Kline each drove in a run in the effort for the Bearcats.

After putting together a scoring threat in the second inning, McKendree grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third. Snider led off the frame with a single. Two batters later, Calvird ripped a single off the second baseman's glove to move Snider to second base. With two outs, Kline singled up the middle, and Snider beat the throw to the plate to give the Bearcats their first lead of the day.

In the fourth inning, Gargus led off with a single and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by junior catcher Tom Collins (Collinsville, IL/Metro East Lutheran). After freshman infielder Blake Abbott (Peoria, IL/Dunlap) reached on an infield single, Snider brought Gargus home when he grounded into a fielder's choice to extend the Bearcats' lead to 2-0.

UMSL (25-18) grabbed the lead for good with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead. The Tritons then erupted for nine runs in the bottom of the eighth to account for the final margin. UMSL sent 14 batters to the plate in the eighth inning.

Sophomore right-hander Ben Dallesasse (DeKalb, IL/DeKalb) held the Tritons in check until UMSL posted its four-run sixth inning. In six innings of work, Dallesasse scattered seven hits with four earned runs. He walked one and struck out three in his final start of 2012. Dallesasse posted a team-best five victories on the mound for McKendree.

The Tritons won the season series against McKendree, having already posted an 8-2 win over the Bearcats back on April 11 at Hypes Field.
