Kavel Smith (Kingston, Jamaica/St. George’s College) scored two goals in the second half on Sunday to break open a tie game and help lead the McKendree University men's soccer team to a 3-1 conference win over Saint Joseph's College (Ind.).
The win helped the Bearcats snap a two-game skid and improve to 5-3 overall and 3-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. McKendree will make its first true roadtrip of the season next weekend when it travels to Romeoville, Ill., on Friday, Sep. 28 to face Lewis University in a GLVC contest at 5 p.m.
Thinsg were going well for the Bearcats early when freshman midfielder
Eddie Wilding (Felixstowe, Sussex, England/Doncaster College) put McKendree in front, 1-0, in the 12th minute on an unassisted goal, but the Pumas bounced back and tied the game, 1-1, in the 40th minute on a free kick by Kevin Amaizo from 25 yards out.
Smith broke the tie in the 59th minute with an unassisted goal, and scored again in the 73rd minute off an assist from sophomore midfielder
Cody Fritsche (High Ridge, Mo./Lutheran South) to give McKendree the 3-1 win.
Freshman goalkeeper
Matt Derrington (St. Louis, Mo./Trinity Catholic) improved to 2-0 overall and grabbed four saves in the win.
