Bearcats Fall At Missouri-St. Louis 65-50, Woelfel and Voss Move Up On Career Lists

Box Score (ST. LOUIS, Mo., Jan. 12)- The McKendree University women's basketball team lost 65-50 at University of Missouri-St. Louis in a Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.

McKendree fell to 5-7 overall and 0-4 in GLVC play this season. The Bearcats will return home for a three-gme homestand on Thursday, Jan. 17, when they host Lewis University for its GLVC East Division opener at 5:30 p.m.

Senior forward Shelby Woelfel (Jerseyville, Ill./Jerseyville) led McKendree with 11 points, and her two blocks increased her career total to 74, moving her past Autumn Dow into ninth-place on McKendree's all-time blocks list. Senior guard Leann Voss (Breese, Ill./Breese Central) led all players with 10 rebounds and also grabbed two steals to increase her career total to 166 and pass Kari Crnkovich for ninth place on the schools all-time steals list.

A layup by Woelfel put McKendree in front 5-2 in the first minute of play, but the Tritons used an 8-0 run to take a 10-5 lead at the 15:21 mark of the first half. Missouri-St. Louis held onto its five-point lead for the next seven minutes, but jumpers by sophomore guard Haeley Kreisel (Warsaw, Mo./Warsaw) and Woelfel on back-to-back possessions cut McKendree's deficit to 17-16 at the 6:55 mark. The Tritons went on an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 28-16 lead, and the Bearcats went into the half behind 34-21.

A layup by Woelfel and a three-pointer by sophomore guard Caty Ponce (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) cut the deficit to single-digits, 34-26, a minute into the second half, but UMSL went on a 10-3 run to extend its lead out to 44-29 with 15:03 left. McKendree outscored the Tritons 9-2 over the next four minutes to cut the score to 46-38, but UMSL jumped back out to a 15-point lead and held on down the stretch to deny McKendree from its first GLVC win.

Kelly McGovern led all players with 16 points for the Tritons.
