McKendree Drops GLVC Contest To Hot-Shooting Bellarmine 89-62

Box Score (LEBANON, Ill., Jan. 21)- The McKendree University women's basketball team trailed by three at the half, but couldn't keep up with hot-shooting Bellarmine University on Monday night in a 89-62 loss.

The Bearcats fell to 5-10 overall and 0-7 in the GLVC, and will travel to Indianapolis, Ind., on Thursday, Jan. 24 to face No. 5 University of Indianapolis in a Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division contest at 5:30 p.m. ET.

McKendree had four score in double-figures and were led by junior guard Brittany Willis (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South)' 21 points. Sophomore guard Caty Ponce (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) scored 17 points, while freshman guard Liz Gilman (St. Louis, Mo./Principia) and senior forward Shelby Woelfel (Jerseyville, Ill./Jerseyville) each had 10 points. Gilman also grabbed a career-high five steals.

Bellarmine shot a blistering 57.4-percent from the field, including 45.5-percent from beyond the arc, in the game, while the Bearcats shot 37.5-percent from the field. McKendree edged Bellarmine at the free throw line, shooting 83.3-percent (15-18) to their 81.8-percent (9-11).

The Bearcats led by as many as six, 21-15, in the first half, but the Lady Knights regained the lead, 30-29, withwith 2:39 left in the half. McKendree cut its deficit to one two times in the final two minutes of the half, but found itself trailing 37-34 at the break.

Bellarmine didnt lose its hot-hand at the half and shot 58.3-percent from the field in the second half. The Bearcats kept the deficit in single-digits for the first four minutes of the second half, but a 9-0 run by the Lady Knights soon after put things out of reach for McKendree.

Darion Hutchinson led Bellarmine with 14 points, while Kylie Brady and Betsy Goodin had 11 points. Kylee Hamilton also had 10 points.
