Box Score (ALAMOSA, Colo., March 10)- The McKendree University women's lacrosse team scored seven second-half goals on Sunday, but its rally came up short in a 11-10 loss at Adams State University.
The Bearcats fell to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association following the loss, and will travel to Durango, Colo., on Tuesday, March 12 to face Fort Lewis College at 3 p.m. MT.
Freshman attack/defense
Rianne Holzmeyer (Hazelwood, Mo./Hazelwood West) led McKendree with five goals, including four in the second half, while freshman midfield
Shirley Boland (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) had three goals and one assist. Freshman midfield's
Bree Suter (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and
Lia Hanenburg (Hazelwood, Mo./Hazelwood West) also each had one goal in the game, while Suter also had six draw controls.
After trading goals early and with the game tied 2-2 with 19:32 left in the first half, Adams State jumped out to a 6-2 lead with four consecutive goals, only for Hanenburg to cut the deficit to 6-3 with a goal with 5:21 left in the half.
The Grizzlies struck again on a free position attempt with 1:36 left in the half and the Bearcats trailed 7-3 at the break.
Boland scored her second goal of the game just over six minutes into the second half to cut the score to 7-4, and Holzmeyer followed with an unassisted goal a minute later to bring McKendree within 7-5 with just under 23 minutes left to play.
Adams State responded with two goals to extend its lead out to 9-5, but McKendree bounced back with three straight goals to cut the deficit to 9-8. Suter scored her 10th goal of the season on a free position attempt to start the rally, and Boland and Holzmeyer followed with unassisted goals to come within one.
Both teams traded goals over the final five minutes of play, with Holzmeyer scoring both for the Bearcats, but McKendree couldn't find a break in the Adams State defense over the final 2:17 of the game to suffer the loss.
Freshman goalie
Kelly Eastman (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) had eight saves for the Bearcats and fell to 1-4 in goal this season.
