Bearcats Come Up Short in 17-16 Loss To Findlay

Box Score (LEBANON, Ill., March 17)- Three McKendree players scored four goals on Sunday in a close 17-16 loss to Findlay University.

The Bearcats fall to 1-8 overall with the loss and will travel to St. Charles, Mo., on Friday, March 22 to face Lindenwood University in a conference game at 7 p.m.

Freshman attacker/defender Rianne Holzmeyer (Hazelwood, Mo./Hazelwood West) and freshmen midfielder Sarah Collins (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) and Bree Suter (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) all tallied four goals in the game, while Collins and Suter also combined for three assists. Freshman midfielder Shirley Boland (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) and freshman attacker Krystin Major (Arnold, Md./Indian Creek) also each had two goals, while Boland led the team with four draw controls.

Collins and Boland scored unassisted goals on back-to-back possessions to tie the game 2-2 in the early going, but the Oilers answered with two goals of their own to regain the lead 4-3.  Suter scored her first goal of the game with just under 18 minutes to play in the half to cut the score to 4-3, but Findlay responded with four goals to jump out to a 8-3 lead. The Bearcats scored four goals over the next seven and a half minutes to come within two, 9-7, and kept things close and trailed 12-9 at the half.

Trailing 16-13 with under 15 minutes to go in the game, McKendree scored three goals on consecutive possessions to tie the game. Major got things started with a goal off an assist by Collins to cut the score to 16-14, and Suter brought the Bearcats within one when she scored off an assist by Collins, her sixth of the season, with 12 minutes to go in the game. Holzmeyer tied the game 41-seconds later when she snuck one by the Oiler goalie.

Findlay scored on a free position attempt with 9:03 remaining to take a 17-16 lead and held on for the win.
