Boland Records Hat-Trick, but Bearcats Fall To Lake Erie 24-8

Box Score (GRAND JUNCTION, Colo., March 8)- Freshman midfield Shirley Boland (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) scored three goals, but the McKendree University women's lacrosse team fell to Lake Erie College, 24-8, in Grand Juction, Colo., on Friday.

The Bearcats fall to 1-2 overall on the season and will open up Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association play on Saturday, March 9 at 1 p.m. MST.

Boland led McKendree with three goals, while freshmen midfields Sarah Collins (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) and Bree Suter (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) each had two goals, and freshman attack/defense Rianne Holzmeyer (Hazelwood, Mo./Hazelwood West) also scored once. Boland and Suter also each had five draw controls in the contest.

The Storm opened up the game with four goals in the first eight minutes of the game, but McKendree cut the deficit with back-to-back goals in 1:17 to cut the deficit to 4-2. Boland scored her first goal of the game unassisted, and Holzmeyer followed with a goal off an assist by fellow freshman attack/defense Krysta Swalley (Hazelwood, Mo./Hazelwood West).

Lake Erie struck again to extend its lead to 5-2, but Boland scored off an assist by sophomore attack Michelle Allen (Saint Louis, Mo./Notre Dame) to bring McKendree within 5-3 with 18:54 left in the half.

The Storm extended its lead to 11-3, but the Bearcats would answer with three consecutive goals to come within 11-6. Suter scored on a free position attempt to make the score 11-4, and Collins scored unassisted just over a minute later to cut the deficit to 11-5. Suter scored unassisted with 19-seconds remaining, but Lake Erie scored 10 seconds later to make the score 12-6 at the half.

The second half opened up with two goals by the Storm, but Boland scored her third and final goal at the 23:34 mark to bring the score to 14-7.

Lake Erie kept up the offensive pressure and scored six goals in the next 7:09, before Collins scored her second goal of the game on a free position shot at the 13:59 mark.

The Storm closed out the game with four additional goals to end the game 24-8.

Freshman goalie Kelly Eastman (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) fell to 1-3 in the cage with the loss and had 10 saves in the contest.
