Walk-Off Single Pushes Southern Indiana Past McKendree Baseball Team in GLVC Play, 3-2

Pierce Borah was 3-for-3 against Southern Indiana
Box Score (EVANSVILLE, Ind., April 26)—The McKendree University baseball team was edged in Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Friday evening by the University of Southern Indiana, 3-2.

The host Screaming Eagles plated the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning on an RBI infield single by pinch-hitter Brad Wannemuehler. The loss sends the Bearcats to 18-19 overall and 13-16 in GLVC action. McKendree and Southern Indiana are slated to play a conference doubleheader on Saturday, with first pitch set for 2 p.m.

Friday night's game was dominated by the starting pitchers for each squad. McKendree freshman left-hander Sam Lidisky (Swansea, IL/Althoff Catholic) turned in another solid performance in his rookie season, giving up six hits and two earned runs over the first eight innings. Lidisky walked two and struck out five in the contest. Southern Indiana's Ben Wright went the distance in picking up the win, scattering eight hits with one earned run, one walk and six strikeouts. Wright threw 145 pitches in the effort.

Sophomore infielder Pierce Borah (Mt. Vernon, IL/Mt. Vernon) was the only player for either squad to register a multi-hit game as he went 3-for-3 on the night. Borah also scored the first run of the contest for the Bearcats.

The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning, when McKendree was finally able to break through against Wright. Borah singled with one out and moved to second when junior catcher Tyler Collins (Marietta, GA/Walker) was hit by a pitch. After a groundout moved Borah and Collins up one base each, sophomore outfielder Bryce Harre (Nashville, IL/Nashville) hit a slow bouncer deep in the hole at short. Harre beat the throw for an infield single to bring home Borah, and an errant throw went in the Bearcats' dugout to allow Collins to score with the second run to give McKendree a 1-0 advantage.

Southern Indiana (26-15, 15-14 GLVC) answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull within 2-1, then scratched out the tying run in the sixth to pull even at 2-2. The score stood until the ninth inning, when A.J. Dokey led off for the Screaming Eagles with a walk. A sacrifice bunt moved Dokey into scoring position. Two batters later, Wannemuehler came up and hit a high bouncer up the middle. Junior shortstop Tony Kossina (Millstadt, IL/Belleville West) angled behind the second-base bag, fielded the ball and threw to first base. Wannemuehler beat the throw for a single. Meanwhile, Dokey never broke stride and raced for home, sliding across the plate ahead of the throw home to score the winning run.

Freshman right-hander A.J. Wise (Troy, IL/Triad) was charged with the hard-luck loss for McKendree.
