GLVC Road Matches at Quincy, #18 Truman State Await McKendree Volleyball Team

(LEBANON, Ill., Sept. 26)--A
fter splitting its first two Great Lakes Valley Conference matches of the 2013 season at home last weekend, the Bearcats will hit the road for to face a pair of GLVC West Division foes. McKendree will first visit Quincy University for a Saturday evening match at 5 p.m., before making the trip to Kirksville, Mo., for a contest against Truman State University on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Bearcats snapped a six-match losing streak on Sunday when they rallied to defeat Maryville University in five sets. The deciding set went overtime, as three consecutive kills from freshman outside hitter Bailey Kampwerth (Breese, IL/Mater Dei) enabled McKendree to post a 23-21 win. The Bearcats made their home debut for 2013 a day earlier with a conference loss to the University of Missouri-St. Louis. McKendree will take a 2-8 overall record on the road for this weekend's contest.

Kampwerth leads the offense for McKendree with 96 kills, while sophomore outside hitter Hannah Wessel (Waterloo, IL/Gibault Catholic) and freshman middle hitter Sophie Fairman (Staunton, IL/Staunton) are tied for second on the squad with 70 attacks each. Wessel is also the first Bearcat to reach double figures in service aces with 10. Fairman paces the team with 21 blocks, and junior middle hitter Trina Isaak (Highland, IL/Highland) sits in second in the category with 16 blocks.

Freshman setter Rebecca Nauman (Yorkville, IL/Yorkville) has handed out 234 assists through the Bearcats' first 10 matches of the season. Senior Maddie Kelly (Lake Saint Louis, MO/Timberland) continues her solid play along the back row, handling a team-best 159 digs.

Quincy enters the weekend with an overall record of 4-6. The Hawks dropped both of their GLVC matches last weekend, falling at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and Lewis University. Junior Samantha Haegele leads a balanced offensive attack for Quincy with 114 klils while senior Briann Joslin is right behind with 108 attacks. The setting duties are split between sophomores Renee Beranek (175 assists) and Courtney O'Brien (171 assists). Freshman Emily Lindemulder has put down 32 blocks for the Hawks.

McKendree and Quincy met last Oct. 21 in Quincy, Ill., with the Bearcats rolling to a sweep in the best-of-five contest. Senior Maureen Nesbit (Belleville, IL/Althoff Catholic) registered a match-high 17 kills to lead the way for McKendree.

Truman State -- the newest member of the GLVC -- carries the No. 18 ranking in the latest AVCA Division II poll into this weekend's play. The Bulldogs split their first two league contests on the road last weekend, dropping a four-set decision at Lewis before sweeping Wisconsin-Parkside. Junior Allie Brak leads the way for Truman State with 152 attacks, and is followed by sophomore Abby Heise with 107 kills. Sophomore Emilee Walters has contributed a team-leading 43 blocks, while junior Abby Moser has handled 150 digs from the back row. Junior Meghan ZImmerman leads the GLVC in total assists with 451 and ranks second in assists per match (10.25).

The Bearcats and Bulldogs faced off in the 2012 season opener last Aug. 31 at the Days Inn/Bulldog Invitational hosted by Truman State. The Bulldogs swept McKendree 3-0 in the Bearcats' head coaching debut of Lisa Orlet.
