The McKendree University women's basketball team will tip-off 2014 with a set of Great Lakes Valley Conference games this weekend.
The Bearcats will host University of Missouri-St. Louis Friday, Jan. 3 at 5:30 p.m., before hosting Maryville University on Sunday, Jan. 5 at 1 p.m.
SCOUTING THE TRITONS: University of Missouri-St. Louis enters the weekend 8-1 overall and 1-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Tritons have won seven-straight games, including wins over Kentucky Wesleyan and Davis & Elkins College on Dec. 21-22. The Bearcats are 4-19 all-time against UMSL with the last win coming on Nov. 19, 2007 in a 65-63 victory.
SCOUTING THE SAINTS: Maryville University enters the weekend with an overall mark of 7-4 and a 0-1 record in the GLVC. The Saints returned from a three-game series in Puerto Rico and is also on a three-game winning streak. McKendree trails the all-time series, 1-2, with a 74-56 win on Nov. 26, 2008 being the lone victory.
PONCE SURPASSES 1,000 CAREER POINT MARK: Junior guard
Caty Ponce (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) scored her 1,000th career point at McKendree on Dec. 22 against Kentucky Wesleyan. She is the 13th player to join the 1000-point club at McKendree, and needs 82 points to move into 12th place on the all-time scoring list.
WILLIS CLOSING IN ON 1,000 CAREER POINTS: Senior guard
Brittany Willis (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South) is also closing in on a spot in the 1,000 point club. She currently sits at 865 points, leaving her 135 points away from the 1,000 career points milestone.
UP NEXT: The Bearcats will hit the road next weekend for their first two conference road games of the season. McKendree will play Quincy University on Thursday, Jan. 9 at 5:15 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. game at Truman State on Saturday, Jan. 11.
