Box Score (LEBANON, Ill., Oct. 26)- The McKendree University men's soccer team lost a heartbreaker in its final home game of the season on Sunday, 2-1, to Bellarmine University in double overtime.
The loss drops the Bearcats to 5-9-2 overall and 5-8-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, and they will hit the road for their final regular season game on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at University of Illinois Springfield.
Prior to the game, McKendree honored seniors
Connor Cassidy (Glasgow, Scotland/St. Andrews),
C.J. Cerna (Collinsville, Ill./Collinsville),
Joe Hilderbrand (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney),
Kavel Smith (Kingston, Jamaica/St. George’s College) and
Seth Wilson (Bethalto, Ill./Civic Memorial) as part of senior day festivities.
The Bearcats got on the scoreboard first, taking a 1-0 lead on a header by sophomore forward
Felipe Thompson (Santiago, Chile/Hurricane High School) off an assist by junior defender
Jordan Pratte (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central High School) in the 18th minute. The goal was Thompson's fourth of the season, and third in the past two games.
McKendree appeared to be headed for the win, but the Knights tied the game with 21-seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Neither team took advantage of the first overtime period, but Bellarmine ended the game in the 109th minute on a goal by Ryan Fagan.
Junior goalkeeper
Scott Armistead (Auckland, New Zealand/Saint Peter's College) fell to 5-8-2 overall and had four saves in the loss.
