(LEBANON, Ill., Dec. 10)--The McKendree University men's basketball team will put its season-opening four-game win streak on the line this week by hosting a pair of non-conference games at the Harry M. Statham Sports Center. The Bearcats will open the week by taking on Greenville College Wednesday night at 7 p.m. before Trevecca Nazarene University comes to town for a 3 p.m. contest on Saturday.
The Bearcats pushed their record to 4-0 on the year thanks to a 96-44 victory on Saturday at home against Central Christian College. McKendree rolled to a 52-19 halftime lead by shooting 71 percent in the opening period against the Saints. Four different players scored in double figures in the win, led by a 19-point effort from senior guard/forward
Logan Carson (DuQuoin, IL/DuQuoin). He also dished out a team-high five assists in the win. Junior guard/forward
John Murphy (Peoria, IL/Richwoods) connected for all 15 of his points in the first half, going 7-of-8 from the floor. Sophomore forward
Brian Koch (Mt. Vernon, IN/Mt. Vernon) played a little over 10 minutes in the second half, but finished with a career-high 13 points. Sophomore guard
Michael Jackson (O'Fallon, IL/O'Fallon) also turned in a career-best performance, netting 10 points in the effort against Central Christian.Â
In all four of its games this season, McKendree has shot better than 50 percent from the field. The Bearcats currently lead the Great Lakes Valley Conference in field goal percentage, along with six other statistical categories. McKendree is also among the league's best in three-point field goal defense, allowing its opponents just 24.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc. That total is also good for fourth among all NCAA Division II programs entering the week.Â
Senior forward
Matt Holmes (Houston, TX/Marshall) lead three McKendree players averaging in double figures at 15.8 points per game. Holmes is fourth in NCAA Division II in field goal percentage at .730. He is also the Bearcats' leading rebounder through four games at 7.5 caroms per contest. Carson is second on the squad in scoring at 15.3 points a game, and junior forward
Brandon Book (Albers, IL/Breese Central) is next at 12.3 points per outing. Book has also sank a team-best 13 three-pointers, while Carson has dished out 17 assists.
Greenville comes to Lebanon with a 5-3 overall record and a 2-0 mark in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Panthers have won each of their last three games, including a 75-69 triumph on Monday, Senior forward Ron Harris paced Greenville with 21 points and eight rebounds, while junior forward Andrew Scott connected for 15 points as he was 7-of-8 from the field. Sophomore guard Michael Holm handed out a game-high seven assists for the Panthers in the non-conference win.
Harris leads Greenville in scoring this season at 15 points per contest. He is also the Panthers' top rebounder at 7.6 per outing. Junior forward Tim Daniel averages 11.3 points a game while sophomore forward Nick Tristo also scores in double figures for Greenville at 10.7 points per contest. Junior guard Stevonte Young has handed out a team-high 34 assists with junior guard Brian Ehresman right behind at 30 assists.Â
Wednesday's game will mark the first meeting since the 2007-08 season between McKendree and Greenville. The Bearcats notched an 85-56 win over the Panthers back on Nov. 20, 2007 at the Statham Center.Â
Since McKendree posted a 90-81 victory down in Nashville, Tenn., on Nov. 29, Trevecca Nazarene has put together a three-game win streak. Included in that run are a pair of Great Midwest Athletic Conference wins for the Trojans. Trevecca Nazarene is now 4-5 on the year and 2-0 in the GMAC following a 75-69 win at Ohio Valley College on Saturday. Five Trojans scored in double figures in the win, led by junior guard Byron Sanford with 17 points. Sanford also chipped in with six assists and seven rebounds in the outing. Sophomore guard Percy Blade connected for 15 points, while junior guard Jalen Palm came off the bench to post 12 points and seven rebounds.Â
Sanford leads the Trojans in both scoring at 16.3 points per game and rebounding at 7.1 boards per contest. He also has team-high totals of 42 assists and 27 steals for Trevecca Nazarene. Palm and junior guard Tyrell Corlew each average 12.1 points a game, while junior wing Christopher Elliott has connected for 10.4 points per outing.Â
In the first meeting of the season between the two schools, McKendree built a 17-point lead midway through the second half and held off a late charge from Trevecca Nazarene to post its nine-point win. Holmes poured in a career-high 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the win. Carson helped out with 20 points and seven rebounds to go along with a career-best six assists. Book netted eight of his 11 points in the second half for the Bearcats as senior forward
Arthur Williams (Cairo, IL/Cairo) helped out with 10 points. McKendree shot nearly 61 percent from the field in the second half and 56 percent for the contest as the Bearcats notched their first road win of 2014-15.Â
Following Saturday's game with Trevecca Nazarene, McKendree will wrap up the first portion of its 2014-15 season on Tuesday with a trip to Wilbeforce, Ohio, to take on Central State University on Tuesday.Â
