(LEBANON, Ill., Feb. 17)--The McKendree University men's basketball team will wrap up the home portion of its 2013-14 schedule on Monday when the Bearcats play host to Maryville University in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest at 7:30 p.m.
Monday's game is a make-up of the contest that was postponed on Jan. 5 and 6 due to a winter storm that dumped several inches of snow in the St. Louis metro area. The match-up will be broadcast live on the Bearcat Sports Network at
www.mckbearcats.com/watchlive. Joe Zydlo will have the call with Kent Zimmerman providing the color commentary. The broadcast will begin with a 10-minute pre-game show.
McKendree finds itself in a battle for one of the last spots in the field for the 2014 GLVC Tournament, which opens with first-round games at campus sites on Sunday, March 2. The Bearcats enter tonight's game with an overall record of 9-13 and a 3-11 mark in the GLVC. Twelve teams earn a post-season berth, and a victory over Maryville would solidify the Bearcats' cause. McKendree dropped a pair of key GLVC games on the road last week, falling 83-79 at William Jewell College on Thursday before dropping an 88-83 decision in its first-ever meeting with Rockhurst University on Saturday.Â
Senior guard
Clinton Happe (Evansville, IN/F.J. Reitz) continues to lead the Bearcats in scoring at 16.2 points per game, while junior guard
Mike DiGregorio (Morton Grove, IL/Niles Notre Dame) has pulled right behind Happe at 15.8 points per outing. DiGregorio dropped 26 points at Rockhurst, and has averaged 21.5 points in his last four outings. Happe paces all GLVC players in both free throw percentage (.887) and minutes played per game (36.3).Â
Junior forward
Matt Holmes (Houston, TX/Marshall) is the other McKendree player averaging in double figures at 12.1 points a contest. Holmes has moved into the top 10 in the GLVC in both field goal percentage (.592) and rebounds (7.7 RPG).Â
McKendree has already secured a winning home record for the 2013-14 season. The Bearcats bring an 8-6 mark at the Harry M. Statham Sports Center into Monday's game with Maryville. Following the Maryville contest, the Bearcats will head north for their final three games of the regular season. McKendree will be at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside for a Thursday night tilt before heading to Romeoville, Ill., to take on Lewis University Saturday afternoon.
The Bearcats are scheduled to close out the 2013-14 regular season on Thursday, Feb. 27 at the University of Illinois Springfield.
ABOUT MARYVILLE: The Saints are 11-11 overall and 5-9 in GLVC play. The Saints have dropped two straight games, four of their last five and seven of their last nine outings. Maryville traveled east last weekend for conference play and dropped decisions of 64-61 at the University of Southern Indiana on Thursday and 76-72 at Bellarmine University on Saturday. Junior guard Armon Provo leads the Saints in scoring at 15.6 points per game. Provo is shooting just over 50 percent from the field, including a robust 44.2 percent from three-point range. He has also connected on 86.1 percent of his free throw tries. Senior guard Asa Toney is right behind Provo in the scoring column for Maryville at 14.8 points per outing. Toney is sixth in the GLVC in assists per game at 4.7 per contest.
Head coach Kevin Carroll is in his fourth season at the helm of the Saints' program. He led Maryville to 12 GLVC victories a year ago.Â
McKendree holds a 4-3 edge in the series against Maryville during the
Harry Statham Era (1966 to present). The Saints have won the last three meetings, which includes last year's 72-69 triumph over the Bearcats on Jan. 10, 2013 in St. Louis.Â
