McKendree Men’s Volleyball Team Edged in Four Sets by Grand Canyon

Dustin Borenstein put down a match-high 15 kills against Grand Canyon
Box Score (LEBANON, Ill., Feb. 9)—The McKendree University men's volleyball team was defeated in four sets on Sunday by Grand Canyon University at the Harry M. Statham Sports Center. The visiting Antelopes pulled away to win the final two sets and the match by scores of 25-16, 21-25, 25-16 and 25-18.
 
The loss gives the Bearcats an overall record of 1-11 in its inaugural season. McKendree will make the short trip to St. Louis Tuesday evening for a match against Missouri Baptist University. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
 
Freshman outside hitter Dustin Borenstein (Highland Park, IL/Highland Park) led McKendree with 15 kills, including seven in the second set. Freshman outside hitter Andy Schnittker put down six of his 13 attacks in the opening set for the Bearcats. Freshman setter Jack MacLean handed out a match-high 39 assists against Grand Canyon, while freshman outside hitter Mike Polizzi contributed 10 digs from the back row.
 
In the first set, Grand Canyon (6-5) led for all but two points. McKendree tied the match at 1-1 and again at 6-6 following a kill by Borenstein. The Antelopes went to score five of the next six points to build an 11-7 advantage. The lead grew to as many as eight points as Grand Canyon grabbed an early lead in the match.
 
McKendree turned the tables on Grand Canyon in the second set, sprinting to a 5-2 lead thanks in part to a pair of kills from Borenstein. The Bearcats took its biggest lead of the game at 21-15 before the Antelopes rallied and fought off two set points before McKendree was able to even the contest at a set apiece.
 
The teams went nose-to-nose in the third set and was tied midway through the contest at 13-13. Grand Canyon took the lead for good by scoring four of the next five points to stretch its advantage to 17-14. The Antelopes then close the set on an 8-1 run to regain the lead for the match. McKendree scored the first four points of set four before Grand Canyon responded with five consecutive points to seize the lead. The Bearcats' final lead of the day came at 14-13 after a kill from Polizzi. The Antelopes quickly regained the lead and held off McKendree to take the match.
 
Ben Ponnet had a match-high 14 kills to lead Grand Canyon, while Keith Smith contributed 33 assists and Jared Morrison had 12 digs for the Antelopes.
