Men’s Volleyball Battles Past Alderson-Broaddus in Three Sets, Pushes Win Streak to Four

Wyatt Patterson registered 13 kills and a .545 hitting percentage against Alderson-Broaddus
Box Score (LEBANON, Ill., March 10)—Freshman middle blocker Wyatt Patterson (Flossmoor, IL/Homewood-Flossmoor) put down a team-high 13 kills to lead the McKendree University men's volleyball to a three-set sweep Monday at home over Alderson-Broaddus University. The Bearcats won by scores of 25-22, 25-21 and 25-23.
 
McKendree rolled to its fourth consecutive victory to improve to 7-15 on the year. The Bearcats will look to keep the momentum going with a road contest Tuesday at Lindenwood University. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in St. Charles, Mo.
 
In addition to his 13 kills, Patterson posted a hitting percentage of .545 against Alderson-Broaddus. Freshman outside hitter Mike Polizzi added nine kills in the win for McKendree, while freshman right-side hitter Eric Abrolat (Ballwin, MO/Marquette) chipped in with eight attacks and a .467 hitting percentage. Freshman setter Jack MacLean registered a match-high 34 assists, while freshman outside hitter Andy Schnittker contributed seven kills, five digs and three service aces for the Bearcats.
 
McKendree had to rally in the later stages of the first and third sets to record its sweep of the visiting Battlers. In the first set, Alderson-Broaddus (7-7) built a 12-9 advantage before the Bearcats eventually pulled even, then used a 5-1 run to take the lead for good at 21-17. A kill from Patterson finished off the first-set victory for McKendree.
 
The Bearcats stormed out of the gates with a 10-4 run to start the second set. Alderson-Broaddus fought back and scored nine of the next 13 points to pull within 14-13. McKendree stretched back to five points and fended off another challenge from the Battlers to grab a two-set lead in the contest.
 
Alderson-Broaddus led for most of the third set, with its biggest advantage coming at 11-8. Patterson then collected three kills during a 4-0 run that pushed McKendree back in front at 12-11. From that point, there were five ties and four lead changes ensued as the Bearcats went ahead to stay at 20-16 thanks to a 5-0 burst. Schnittker helped fuel the run with a kill and a pair of aces.
 
Will Ruiz led Alderson-Broaddus with a match-high 14 kills, while Kody Deiter had 31 assists and Orlando Trujillo handled 12 digs in the back row for the Battlers.
