Box Score (ST. CHARLES, Mo., March 11)—The McKendree University men's volleyball team saw its four-match win streak come to an end Tuesday when the Bearcats were swept in a best-of-five match at Lindenwood University. The host Lions won by scores of 25-11, 25-19 and 25-17.
McKendree slips to 7-16 on the year and will return to the Harry M. Statham Sports Center this weekend to host the McKendree Crossover Classic. The Bearcats will play in three matches over two days, beginning with a 4 p.m. contest against King University.
At Lindenwood, freshman outside hitter
Dustin Borenstein (Highland Park, IL/Highland Park) led all players with nine kills to pace McKendree. Freshman setter Jack MacLean was responsible for 17 assists against the Lions, while freshman libero
Brice Miller (O'Fallon, IL/Althoff Catholic) and freshman right-side hitter
Maalik Walker (Shorewood, IL/Minooka) each collected five digs in the match.
Lindenwood (14-6) put up big hitting numbers in recording the sweep on Tuesday. As a team, the Lions hit .443. Lindenwood also collected 20 assisted blocks in the outing.
In the first set, Lindenwood opened an 8-4 lead before McKendree scored four of the next five points to pull within 9-8. The Lions responded with a 10-1 run to stretch its advantage to 19-9 in cruising to the first set win. Lindenwood led by as many as seven points in the second set before the Bearcats put together a late rally. McKendree chipped away at the deficit and pulled to within 22-19. However, the Lions reeled off the final three points to build a two-set lead in the match.
After McKendree scored the first point of the third set on a kill by freshman middle blocker
Wyatt Patterson (Flossmoor, IL/Homewood-Flossmoor), Lindenwood opened up an 8-3 lead and never looked back. McKendree would pull as close as 14-12 following a Lions' service error before the host school slowly pulled away to complete the sweep.
Colin Hackworth and Jake Duckworth each put down seven kills to lead a balanced offensive attack for Lindenwood. Tim Schmidt handed out 31 assists, while Tim Huizinga served up four aces for the Lions.
