Win Streak Grows to Three as McKendree Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Holy Names

Mike Polizzi registered 13 kills in the Bearcats' victory over Holy Names
Box Score (LEBANON, Ill., March 8)—The McKendree University men's volleyball team pushed its win streak to three consecutive matches by posting a three-set sweep Saturday at home against Holy Names University. The Bearcats cruised to the win by scores of 25-13, 25-20 and 25-22.
 
McKendree moves to 6-15 overall with the victory. The Bearcats will play host to Alderson-Broaddus University on Monday, with first serve set for 7 p.m.
 
Freshman outside hitter Mike Polizzi put down a match-high 13 kills to pace the offense for McKendree. Polizzi also had a hitting percentage of .450 in the sweep of the Hawks. Freshman middle blocker Wyatt Patterson (Flossmoor, IL/Homewood-Flossmoor) contributed 10 kills while hitting .353 in the effort. Patterson also had three assisted blocks. Freshman setter Jack MacLean handed out 37 assists for the Bearcats, while Polizzi and freshman libero Brice Miller (O'Fallon, IL/Althoff Catholic) shared team-high honors with five digs.
 
McKendree never trailed in the first set, racing to a 9-3 lead. Later in the set, the Bearcats put together a 4-0 run before closing the contest on a 4-1 spurt to pull away for the early lead. McKendree was also aided by five service errors from Holy Names.
 
The visiting Hawks grabbed an early lead in the second set before McKendree reeled off six consecutive points to take a 9-4 advantage. Patterson and Polizzi each had two kills during the spurt for the Bearcats. Holy Names was able to edge back within two points at 9-7 before McKendree answered with a 5-1 burst to stretch the margin to 14-8. The Bearcats eventually pushed the lead out to eight points in grabbing a two-set lead in the match.
 
Holy Names (1-6) scored three of the first four points in the third set in a see-saw contest. McKendree then scored seven of the next eight points to seize the lead at 8-4. The Hawks chipped away at the deficit and used a 6-1 run to regain the advantage at 13-10. A kill by freshman outside hitter Spencer Sweetin (Defiance, MO/Francis Howell) sparked a 6-1 burst that helped the Bearcats regain a 16-14 lead.
 
The Hawks regained the lead one more time at 19-18 before Polizzi provided three straight kills to push McKendree back in front for good at 22-19.
 
Keenan Paulos led Holy Names with six kills, while Michael Gomez added five attacks. Nelson Fisher had 17 assists and Ramandeep Singh contributed a match-high four blocks for the Hawks.
