Johnson's Walk-Off RBI Single Salvages Softball Split With Missouri S&T

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (LEBANON, Ill., April 11)- Junior centerfielder hit a walk-off RBI single to lead McKendree to a 3-2 win in game two on Friday to help the McKendree softball team to a doubleheader split against Missouri S&T.

The Bearcats are now 15-21 overall and 8-14 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and will host Drury University on Saturday for a conference doubleheader at noon. McKendree will honor its three seniors with a senior day ceremony between games.

The Bearcats held a 4-3 lead after three innings in game one, but gave up four runs in the fifth inning and couldn't rally to fall 7-5. McKendree got on the board in the bottom of the second when a single by junior shortstop Kate Mayes (Collinsville, Ill./Collinsville) was mishandled by the rightfielder and scored sophomore catcher Kaiti Bowen (Elliott, Ill./Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley) from second. Johnson later singled in the inning to score Mayes and senior leftfielder Caitlin Stredde (Pingree Grove, Ill./South Elgin) to take a 3-0 lead.

The Lady Miners tied the game in the top of the third, but McKendree regained the lead, 4-3, in the bottom of the frame on a groundout by Bowen that scored junior first baseman Katie Nauman (Amboy, Ill./Amboy) from third.

Missouri S&T took a permanent lead in the fifth with four runs to take a 7-4 lead, and McKendree scored once in the seventh on a single by junior pinch hitter Kelsie Stoszkus (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township), but were unable to score again to fall in game one.

Mayes led the Bearcats at the plate with two hits, an RBI and a run scored, while freshman pitcher Holly Magre (Festus, Mo./St. Pius X) fell to 3-5 overall with four strikeouts.

Both teams traded runs in early in game two, and McKendree took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning on a single by Johnson that scored Mayes from third. The Miners tied the game, 2-2, in the top of the ninth, but Johnson delivered again in the bottom of the seventh with a single that scored Mayes from second to win the game. Johnson had three hits, with two RBI and a run scored to lead the Bearcats at the plate. Stoszkus improved to 5-6 on the season with the win in relief.
