Box Score 2 (LEBANON, Ill., April 12)- The McKendree University softball team split with Drury University on Saturday and honored three seniors as part of senior day festivities.
The Bearcats are now 16-22 overall and 9-15 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and will travel to Liberty, Mo., on Friday, April 18 to face William Jewell College in a GLVC doubleheader at 12 p.m.
Seniors
Kayla Jenkins (Springfield, Ill./Springfield),
Kay Koonce (Greenville, Ill./Greenville), and
Caitlin Stredde (Pingree Grove, Ill./South Elgin) were all honored between games as part of the senior day festivities.
McKendree fell behind 5-0 after two innings in game one, and cut its deficit to 6-3 after four innings, but couldn't come any closer in a 9-3 loss. The Bearcats got on the board on a sacrifice fly by junior first baseman
Katie Nauman (Amboy, Ill./Amboy) in the fourth inning that brought in freshman second baseman
Jamie Doggendorf (Dittmer, Mo./Northwest) from third. Sophomore catcher
Kaiti Bowen (Elliott, Ill./Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley) doubled to score junior centerfielder
Erica Johnson (New Baden, Ill./Wesclin) and Bowen came in to score on the following play to cut the score to 6-3 after four. The Panthers went on to score three runs in the sixth inning to make the score 9-3.
Sophomore pitcher
Taylor Barnouski (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) fell to 3-6 overall and one strikeout in the loss, while Doggendorf led McKendree at the plate with three hits, including one double, and one run scored.
Game two was knotted up, 2-2, after the first inning, and the Bearcats went on to score four more runs over the remainder of the game to earn a 6-2 win. The Bearcats tied the game up 2-2 in the bottom of the first inning, scoring their first run on a fielders choice by Nauman that scored junior shortstop
Kate Mayes (Collinsville, Ill./Collinsville) and the second when freshman third baseman
Hanna Branch (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. McKendree took a 3-2 lead in the second inning when Mayes scored from third on a wild pitch, and extended its lead to 6-2 with three runs in the fourth inning. A triple by Mayes scored Stredde from first and later scored on an error by the catcher. Doggendorf scored the final run of the game from third later in the inning when Johnson got caught in a rundown between first and second.
Mayes had three hits, including a triple, an RBI and three runs scored, while junior pitcher
Kelsie Stoszkus (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) improved to 6-6 with the win.
