Box Score (LEBANON, Ill., Jan. 19)- The McKendree University women's basketball team had four players score in double-figures on Monday in a 70-61 conference win at University of Illinois at Springfield.
The Bearcats improve to 2-13 overall and 1-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with the win, and will travel to Indianapolis, Ind., on Thursday, Jan. 22 to play University of Indianapolis at 4:30 p.m. ET.
Junior guard/forward
Danielle Amann-Stewart (Mascoutah, Ill./Mascoutah) led all players with a season-high 20 points, while senior guard
Caty Ponce (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) added 16 points, including a nine-of-nine effort from the free throw line. Ponce's 16 points also moved her into a tie for 6th place with Ashley Agee on McKendree's all-time scoring list at 1,416 points. Sophomore forward
Gabrielle Williams (Minooka, Ill./Plainfield East) and sophomore guard
Amber Alexander (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for McKendree in the win. Alexander also swiped a career-high five steals in the contest.
The Bearcats faced their largest deficit of the night, 29-19, with 4:37 left in the first half, but outscored the Prairie Stars, 19-4, in the remainder of the half to cut the score to 33-31 at the half.
McKendree started the second half with five-straight points by junior guard/forward
Jameeka Bouie (Racine, Wis./Case) to take its first lead of the game 36-33. In a second half that featured five lead changes, the Bearcats took the lead for good on a layup by Alexander with 11:15 left in the second half. Illinois-Springfield cut the score to 52-51 with 9:13 left, but McKendree slowly extended its lead with a 10-of-14 effort from the free throw line down the stretch to earn the 70-61 win.
