Box Score (LEBANON, Ill., Feb. 14)—For the second time in as many nights, the McKendree University men's volleyball team was defeated at home in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play by Grand Canyon University. The visiting Antelopes won by scores of 25-17, 32-30 and 25-19.
With the loss, the Bearcats drop to 4-10 overall and 0-7 in MIVA action. McKendree will wrap up its season-long eight-match home stand Sunday afternoon when King University visits the Harry M. Statham Sports Center for non-conference play. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
Freshman
Jared Wilcox (Warrenville, IL/Wheaton-Warrenville South) put down a match-high 17 kills to show the way for McKendree. Sophomore
Wyatt Patterson (Flossmoor, IL/Homewood-Flossmoor) connected for eight kills and a .636 hitting percentage. Freshman
Pasquale Fiduccia (Hanover Park, IL/Glenbard North) had a team-high 29 assists against Grand Canyon, while sophomore
Brice Miller (O'Fallon, IL/Althoff Catholic) anchored the back row with eight digs.
Grand Canyon (7-4, 2-2 MIVA) never trailed in the first set, posting a .565 hitting percentage on its way to grabbing an early lead in the match. In contrast, set two featured 15 ties and four lead changes. McKendree was able to forge a 19-14 lead following a block by freshmen
Brendan Schmidt (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt West) and
Robert Watkins (LaGrange, IL/Lyons Township). The Antelopes chipped away at the deficit and pulled even at 23-23 before winning the next point to serve for the set at 24-23. McKendree and Grand Canyon then went toe-to-toe, trading the next 14 points. In the process the Bearcats fought off seven set points.
However, Grand Canyon was able to scratch out the final point on a McKendree attack error to win the marathon set and grab a 2-0 lead in the match. The Bearcats scored the first three points in the third set, but the Antelopes responded by reeling off five of the next six points to take a 5-4 lead. McKendree tied the match moments later on a Grand Canyon service error before the Antelopes took the lead for good and finished off the sweep.
Gerrard Lipscombe paced Grand Canyon with 15 kills and six digs, while Jon Schaefer added 12 attacks and Shalev Saada notched 11. Puna Kaniho dished out a match-high 40 assists for the Antelopes.
