Men's Volleyball Hosts Defending National Champions from Loyola, Quincy in MIVA Play

(LEBANON, Ill., Feb. 6)--
The McKendree University men's volleyball team will continue its eight-match home stand over the weekend by hosting a pair of Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) matches. First up for the Bearcats will be a Saturday afternoon meeting against Loyola University before Quincy University comes to town on Sunday. Both matches are set to begin at 4 p.m.

McKendree enters the weekend with an overall record of 3-6, while the Bearcats are still in search of their first MIVA victory. McKendree slipped to 0-3 in the league following a four-set loss on Wednesday at home against Lindenwood University. Wyatt Patterson (Flossmoor, IL/Homewood-Flossmoor) led all players in pacing the Bearcats with 14 kills and a .524 hitting percentage. Nolan Rueter (Burlington, WI/Burlington) added eight eight attacks and a team-best six digs. Ian Zalewski (Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandburg) handed out 34 assists against the Lions. 

Loyola comes to Lebanon as the top-ranked team in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division I-II Coaches Poll. The Ramblers claimed the 2014 NCAA men's volleyball national championship and have won their first seven matches heading into their first MIVA match of the year. Cody Caldwell leads a balanced attack for Loyola with 94 kills, while Thomas Jaeschke is right behind wtih 93 attacks. Jaeschke also has a team-leading 55 digs through seven matches. Peter Hutz has dished out 292 assists for the Ramblers, and Jeff Jendryk leads the team up front with 33 blocks. 

Quincy is 5-4 overall this season and 0-2 in MIVA play. The Hawks dropped a pair of league matches last weekend on the road at Ball State University and IPFW. Quincy has played just two of its nine matches to date away from the friendly confines of Pepsi Arena. Jarrod Kelso has shown the way so far for Quincy with 74 kills and 35 blocks. Kelso has also compiled a .403 hitting percentage through nine matches. Brian Hogan has helped run the Hawks' offense by handing out 255 assists, while Jack Gamache anchors the back row with a team-best 69 digs. 

Following Sunday's match against Quincy, McKendree will step out of conference play to host Culver-Stockton College on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
