Baseball Bearcats Fall Twice in Non-Conference Play at Quincy

Matt Sax allowed just three hits and two runs in his first start of the season at Quincy
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (QUINCY, Ill., April 7)—The McKendree University baseball team dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday at Quincy University. The Bearcats were edged 2-1 in the opener before the Hawks jumped out to an early lead and posted a 7-0 triumph in game two.

McKendree moves to 7-21 on the year and will be on the road this weekend for a four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series at the University of Indianapolis. The Bearcats and Greyhounds will tangle in doubleheaders slated for Saturday and Sunday. First pitch each day will come at noon ET.

Sophomore infielder Tyson Boehne (Carlyle, IL/Carlyle) had three hits on the day, including a pair in the nightcap. Boehne stretched his season-high hit streak to 15 consecutive games in the process. Junior outfielder John Tolliver (Salem, IL/Salem) picked up two hits and drove in the Bearcats' lone run in game two.

Senior right-hander Matt Sax (Chicago, IL/Jones Prep) pitched well despite being charged with the game one loss. Sax allowed just three hits and two earned runs over the first four innings. He walked one batter and fanned two.

Quincy (18-11) scored both of its runs in the opener in the second inning off Sax. McKendree responded by cutting the deficit in half in the fourth inning. Boehne and freshman outfielder Brad Groleau (Peru, IL/St. Bede Academy) led off the frame with consecutive singles. Boehne moved to third on a fly out and scored on a wild pitch to bring the Bearcats within 2-1. McKendree threatened in each of the next two innings but could not pick up the equalizer as the Hawks held on for the victory.

In game two, Quincy scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and never trailed in the contest. The Hawks added their final three runs in the fourth inning before the Bearcats broke up the shutout in the fifth inning. Junior shortstop Adam Kunkel (Red Bud, IL/Red Bud) reached on a one-out error before advancing to third base on a double by Boehne. Two batters later, Tolliver delivered an RBI single to plate Kunkel with McKendree's lone run of the nightcap.

Three different McKendree hurlers threw two innings each in game two, as sophomore left-hander Mitchell Langenhorst (Germantown, IL/Mater Dei) picked up the loss.
