(LEBANON, Ill., Sep. 11)- The McKendree University men's soccer team got the only goal it needed in the first half on Friday in a 1-0 win over Bellarmine University in the opening game of its Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule.
The Bearcats improve to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the GLVC, and will travel to Evansville, Ind., on Sunday, Sep. 13 to face University of Southern Indiana at 2:30 p.m.
Both teams battled back and forth in the opening half, but McKendree broke the game open with a goal in the 19th minute by
Clemente Rossi (Santiago, Chile/Saint George's College) on a pass from
Felipe Thompson (Santiago, Chile/Hurricane High School) to take a 1-0 lead. The Knights pulled out all the stops in the second half, outshooting the Bearcats 12-4 and holding a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks, but the McKendree defense kept Bellarmine off the board to earn the 1-0 win.
Scott Armistead (Auckland, New Zealand/Saint Peter's College) improved to 1-1 on the season and had six saves in the shutout win.
