Women’s Soccer Enters Final Weekend of GLVC Play, Hosts Southern Indiana on Senior Day

(LEBANON, Ill., Oct. 20) – The McKendree University women's soccer team enters the final weekend of Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) play in hopes of securing a berth to the 2016 GLVC women's soccer championship tournament.  McKendree enters the weekend with a 11-4 overall record and an 8-4 mark in the GLVC. The Bearcats split last weekend with a 2-1 loss to Rockhurst despite comeback efforts on Friday. On Sunday, McKendree secured its ninth shutout of the season with a 2-0 victory over William Jewell College.
 
SCOUTING THE SCREAMING EAGLES: University of Southern Indiana travels to Lebanon on Friday as they wrap of their longest road trip of the season. Winning three of their last six matches, the Screaming Eagles enter the weekend in search of a berth to the GLVC tournament. With an 8-7 overall record and 5-7 in the GLVC, USI stand a half-game behind eighth place Lewis University. Scoring 26 goals through 15 matches, USI is led in scoring by sophomore Olivia Wilde with five goals and two assists for 12 points. Senior forward Gabriella Korte contributes four goals and four assists.

Last meeting:  September 13, 2015. McKendree completed the come from behind win in the 95th minute with a goal from Alyssa Patterson (Troy, Ill./Triad). USI would strike first with a goal 29:08 into the match. McKendree's Abby Stutz (Godfrey, Ill./Alton) would tie up the match just before the half-way point. Out-shooting USI 10-5 in the second half would force an overtime in which the Bearcats were able to connect after a pair of shots to win 2-1.

SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS: Bellarmine University enters the weekend in third-place of the GLVC standings with a 10-1-3 overall record and 8-1-3 in the conference. Picked to repeat as the conference champion, the Knights have won four of their last six matches.  Bellarmine received votes in this week's NSCAA National Poll, while placing fourth in the first NCAA Midwest Regional rankings. In the spotlight for the Knights is returning GLVC Offensive Player of Year Mary Beth Gorham. Gorham leads the Knights in scoring with seven goals, four assists, and 18 points. Olivia Taylor contributes to the balanced attack with six goals and four assists, while Lauren Holder adds three goals and six assists. In goal Hannah Poteet has seen 1037:14 minutes of action, allowing seven goals and recording 27 saves.  

Last meeting: September 11, 2015. The Bearcat offense dominated the first half offensive battle. Outshooting the 18th ranked Knights 10-4 in the first, McKendree would fail to find the back of the net as the teams entered halftime scoreless. Bellarmine would bend but not break as they responded in the second half outshooting McKendree 7-2. GLVC Offensive Player of the Year, Mary Beth Gorham would break the tie with a goal in the 83rd minute lifting Bellarmine to a 1-0 win.

MCKENDREE VS THE HOOSIER STATE: The McKendree women's soccer program holds a 20-6-4 all-time record against teams from the state of Indiana. McKendree has faced-off against seven different Indiana-based institutions since 1994. The last loss came on October 19, 2012 as the Bearcats were shutout at home by the University of Southern Indiana 3-0. This year McKendree has gone 3-0 vs. the state of Indiana with wins over Oakland City, University of Indianapolis, and Saint Joseph's College.

OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION: Out scoring their opponents 19-6 in the last nine matches, McKendree has seen six different goal scorers. Sydnee Carrol accounts for 11 of those 19 goals, while Chelsea Whittaker (Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand/St Hilda's Collegiate School) adds three.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING: Leading the offensive charge for the Bearcats, Sydnee Carroll (Millstadt, IL/Belleville West) leads the GLVC in goals scored with 15, which also ranks her sixth in NCAA Division II. Carroll also leads the conference and nation in game-winning goals with eight. With five assists this season, Chelsea Whittaker (Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand/St Hilda's Collegiate School) ranks sixth in the GLVC. Zoe Brochu (Ajax, Ontario, Canada/Pickering )'s 67 saves ranks sixth in the GLVC, while she posts an 87 save percentage which ranks in the top 25 of the nation's goalkeepers.

GLVC STANDINGS: McKendree sits in fifth place of the current GLVC standings. McKendree needs just one win this weekend to secure their spot in the GLVC championship tournament.  Quarterfinal matches will be played on October 30 at campus sites before the final four will play at Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis on November 4 and 6.

THIS DAY IN BEARCAT HISTORY: October 21, 2012. Competing in the GLVC for first time in school history, McKendree would pick up their fifth shutout win of the season with a 4-0 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan.  This would be the only time the two squad would meet in program history. Tied at the break, McKendree needed just one goal to get the ball rolling.  Amy Cassiday's goal in the 55th and 67th minute contributed to the four goals scored by the Bearcats in the second half.  The win in Owensboro, Ky. was one of just two wins on the road that season.
