(LEBANON, Ill., Nov. 10) – The McKendree University men's water polo team is set to head to the 2016 Collegiate Water Polo Association Men's National Collegiate Club Championship. The championship tournament will be held at the Rolfs Aquatic Center on the University of Notre Dame campus from Friday – Sunday.
The Bearcats finished the season with an overall record of 11-12 and a record of 9-2 in their division, which earned the team its first ever bid to nationals. In the final CWPA Top 20 poll McKendree grabbed the No. 16 spot after receiving votes in the previous poll. During the season the Bearcats briefly held the No. 1 position, but eventually faltered and dropped to the No. 16 spot.
In 23 games for the Bearcats, freshman attacker
Joseph Mahan (Corinth, TX/John H Guyer High School) netted 76 goals and added 22 assists for a total of 98 points. Mahan also had 53 steals as well as six field blocks. Freshman attacker
Luc Gregory (Laguna Beach, CA/Laguna Beach High School) scored 55 goals and registered 19 assists for 74 points with 31 steals and three field blocks. Freshman utility player
Alex Nicholas (Rolling Meadows, IL/Fremd High School) scored beat the opponents' goaltenders 58 times and added six assists for 64 points on the season. Nicholas also had 41 steals and nine field blocks. Freshman attacker
Michael Krause (St. Louis, MO/Saint Louis University High School) found the back of the net 32 times and added 21 assists for 53 points on the season. He also added 23 steals as well as having two field blocks.
The CWPA Men's National Collegiate Club Championship is not seeded by ability, but rather the results from the previous year's national tournament. McKendree is in the 13
th position, set to play against Boston College of the New England Division in the fourth position, on Friday at 12:30 p.m. EST. The winner moves on to play on Saturday at 10:10 a.m. EST, with the loser playing again Friday at 6:20 p.m. EST. See below for the seeding and matchups of the tournament:
