No. 20 Wrestling Team Finishes Regular Season With 34-12 Win Over Truman State

(LEBANON, Ill., Feb. 19)- The No. 20 McKendree University wrestling team rolled to 34-12 win over Truman State University on Friday to finish its regular season.

The Bearcats improve to 9-9 overall and will travel to Sioux Falls, S.D., on Feb. 26 to compete at the NCAA Super Region Three Tournament.

McKendree got out to a quick start and earned bonus points in two of its first three matches to take a double-digit lead. Sophomore Darren Wynn (Champaign, Ill., Centennial) posted a 17-1 tech fall over Rafael Lopez at 141 pounds, and fellow sophomore Mech Spraggins Jr. (Belleville, Ill., Belleville West High School) followed with a 28-9 tech fall over Dakota Schutter at 149 pounds to lead 10-0. Freshman Isaiah Kemper (Evansville, Ind., Central) went on to earn a 9-3 decision win over Steven Surbinski at 157 pounds to extend the lead to 13-0.

Truman State cut the score to 13-6 with a pin at 165 pounds, but the Bearcats rattled off four-straight wins to regain control for good. Sophomore J.J. Filipek (Warrenton, Mo., Warrenton) pinned Luke Kotomos at the six minute mark at 174 pounds, and senior Cody Willis (Clinton, Ill., Clinton) edged Chase Wrisinger, 7-5, in sudden victory at 184 pounds to push the lead to 22-6. Freshman Luke Diener (Saint Peters, Mo., Francis Howell Central) earned a 4-1 decision win at 197 pounds over Luke Bornhop, and junior Coltyn Pease (Pittsfield, Ill., Pittsfield) defeated Austin Dovin by major decision, 10-1, at heavyweight to take a 29-6 lead.

The Bulldogs got a forfeit win at 125 pounds to cut the score to 29-12, but a tech fall victory by sophomore NaQuan Hardy (Romeoville, Ill., Romeoville) at 133 pounds over Ethan Rentschler, 19-4, ended the dual, 34-12, in favor of McKendree.
