(LEBANON, Ill., March 28)- McKendree University junior goalie
Amy Porta (Ellisville, Mo./Marquette) had a school record 19 saves, including a save of a free position shot with six seconds left, to lead the women's lacrosse team to a 10-9 win over No. 19 Florida Institute of Technology on Monday.
The win was the first for McKendree over a ranked opponent in the programs three seasons of existence. The Bearcats improve to 4-4 overall and will travel to North Canton, Ohio for a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference match at Walsh University on April 1 at 4 p.m. ET.
Porta's 19 saves eclipsed her own previous school record of 18 she set against Shorter University on February 21, 2014. Sophomore
Paige Salthouse (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) led McKendree with four goals, while senior
Rianne Holzmeyer (Hazelwood, Mo./Hazelwood West) and sophomore
Mia Fiore (Eureka, Mo./Eureka High School) each had two goals. Senior
Bree Suter (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and freshman
Hannah Sugarman (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional High School) both added one goal each in the win. Sophomore
Dana DiPasquale (St. Charles, Mo./Barat Academy) had five assists, and Fiore also had seven draw controls.
The Bearcats trailed 7-3 at the half, but used big second half to earn the win. A pair of goals by Fiore out of the half cut McKendree's deficit to 7-5, but a goal by the Panthers made the score 8-5 with just over 18 minutes left to play. The Bearcats scored three-straight to tie the game, 8-8, on a goal by Holzmeyer with 13:56 left, but Florida Tech struck again to regain the lead, 9-8, with 12:20 remaining. A goal by Suter on a free position shot with 12:06 left in the game tied the game back up, 9-9, and Salthouse's fourth and final goal of the game put the Bearcats in front, 10-9, with 18-seconds left. The Panthers had an opportunity to tie with six seconds left, but Porta's save locked up the upset victory.
