(LEBANON, Ill., April 17)—The McKendree University baseball team was defeated in both ends of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at home by the University of Southern Indiana. The Screaming Eagles posted victories of 13-1 in the opener and 7-0 in game two.
With the losses, McKendree slips to 13-23 on the year and 5-11 in GLVC action. The Bearcats will step out of league play to host Maryville University Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Hypes Field. The contest was originally slated to be played April 6, but was postponed due to rain.
Southern Indiana – which led the GLVC in earned-run average entering the weekend – limited McKendree to just one unearned run on 10 hits over the two games. The Screaming Eagles' Devin Williams (game one) and Austin Krizan (game two) each collected complete-game wins to give USI the series win over the Bearcats. McKendree and Southern Indiana split Saturday's twinbill, with the Bearcats taking the second game 9-8 in nine innings.
On Sunday, three McKendree players each posted two hits in the nightcap. Junior infielder

Grant Anderson (Mackinaw, IL/Deer Creek-Mackinaw) all had the multi-hit games for the Bearcats. In the opener, McKendree was able to muster two hits, one of which was a third-inning double off the bat of junior outfielder
Colton Calhoun (Mt. Zion, IL/Mt. Zion).
Southern Indiana (22-14, 11-5 GLVC) scored two runs each in the second, third and fourth innings of game one to build a 6-0 lead. The Screaming Eagles then tacked on three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh before McKendree averted a shutout with a tally in the bottom of the seventh inning. Junior first baseman
Keith Rogers (Marshall, IL/Marshall) started the inning when he reached on catcher's interference. Junior
Connor Davault (Farmington, MO/Farmington) was hit by a pitch to move Rogers to second. Two batters later, junior outfielder
Ryan Cates (Anderson, IN/Yorktown) – who had the walk-off home run to end Saturday's second game – delivered an RBI single to left field to bring home Rogers.
In the nightcap, Southern Indiana scored all of its runs in the fourth inning, plating seven runs highlighted by a trio of home runs. The Screaming Eagles threatened to add to its lead in the later stages of the contest, but McKendree thwarted rallies by turning double plays in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
