Women’s Soccer Heads North Looking To Extend Winning Streak

(LEBANON, Ill., Spet. 29) – The McKendree University women's soccer team will look to extend their two-game winning streak with a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference road matches this weekend. The Bearcats travel north to take on Lewis University on Friday at 7:30 p.m., before taking on the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

McKendree enters the weekend with a 6-2 overall record and a 4-2 mark in the GLVC. The Bearcats picked up two key conference victories last weekend with a 1-0 shutout over Indianapolis and a 5-1 scoring fest over Saint Joseph's College.
 
SCOUTING THE FLYERS: Lewis University enters the weekend with a 4-4-1 overall record and 2-3-1 mark in the GLVC. The Flyers were swept last weekend with losses to University of Southern Indiana. 3-1. and to Bellarmine University in overtime, 2-1. Senior forwards Jessica Chavez and Meg Carmody lead the team in goals scored with four each, while Chavez paces the team with three assists. In net, Jennifer Meyer has registered 40 saves in 833:44 minutes of work, while collecting two shutouts.

Last meeting:  October 4, 2015. Lewis entered Bearcat territory and grabbed a 3-1 victory in an evenly offensive match that saw 13 shots from both squads. Lewis struck first with a goal in the 44th minute and extend their lead with a goal in the 52nd minute. Cassie Kaiping (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) would get the Bearcats on the board with a goal six minutes later to make it 2-1. Lewis would seal a victory with a tally in the 81st minute.

SCOUTING THE RANGERS: University of Wisconsin-Parkside enters the weekend at 4-3-1 overall and 4-2 in conference play. The Rangers picked up a shutout win last Friday against the University of Southern Indiana, before falling to Bellarmine 4-1, which snapped their four-game win streak. Wisconsin-Parkside has seen eight different goal scorers this season, with sophomore Lexi Porter leading the way with three. Taylor Schiffer-Jander also leads the balanced attack with three assists. The Rangers utilize a three-goalie rotation between Adrianna Bratel, Sarah Dobrowolski and Kayla Tabaske. All have seen time in net during GLVC play and allowed a combined 11 goals and 28 saves on 71 shots.  

Last meeting: October 2, 2015. Wisconsin-Parkside would capture the first goal 35 seconds into the match on a header from Vianey Hernandez. McKendree show its resilience by tying the match with a goal from Danielle Hareb (Flatbush, New Zealand/Mount Albert). Being outshot 13-6 in the first half proved to be no challenge as the Bearcats came out firing on all cylinders. Outshooting the Rangers 10-4 in the second half, McKendree would nab the go ahead goal from Sydnee Carroll (Millstadt, IL/Belleville West) in the 60th minute to capture a 2-1 victory.

GLVC WEEKLY HONORS:  Sophomore Sydnee Carroll (Millstadt, IL/Belleville West) was named Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Offensive Player of the Week. Carroll scored the game-winner against University of Indianapolis on Friday as the Bearcats won a 1-0 contest and then tallied two goals and two assists to lead the Bearcats to a 5-1 victory over Saint Joseph's College on Sunday. Carroll leads the team and conference in goals with seven and has tallied 17 points. This is Carroll's first career GLVC Offensive Player of the Week award. 

GLVC STANDINGS: McKendree sits in fourth place of the current GLVC standings. The top eight teams in the conference advance to play in the 2016 GLVC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament. Quarterfinal matches will be played on October 30 at the highest seed before the final four will play at Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis on November 4 and 6.

THIS DAY IN BEARCAT HISTORY: September 30, 2009. Ranked 12th nationally in the NAIA, the McKendree women's soccer team would win a thrilling 1-0 overtime match over No. 16 Park University. Carlee Luehmann would chip in the winning goal in the 95th minute on an assist from Sarah Ryan keeping the Bearcats perfect in the American Midwest Conference. The win also extended the Bearcats winning streak in conference matches to 35 games. The streak would snap at 42 games after the Bearcats would lose that season in the AMC championship 3-2 to Missouri Baptist University.
