(CHICAGO, Ill., Nov. 11) – The McKendree University women's hockey team was defeated by a score of 3-1 on Saturday afternoon by No. 5 University of Massachusetts at the Robert Morris University Showcase.
McKendree falls to 5-4 on the season, and 3-4 in American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) women's D1 play.
UMass scored the only goal of the first period with 4:16 remaining, to hold a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. The Bearcats tied it up in the second period, when freshman forward Jayne Sutton lit the lamp for her first career collegiate goal after receiving the puck from freshman forward Dakota Peterson. After 40 minutes the teams were dead locked at one goal a side. The Minutemen came out strong in the third period, finding the back of the net twice while holding the Bearcats scoreless. At the close of the third period UMass took the 3-1 victory over McKendree.
The Bearcats were edged out in shots on goal, with UMass shooting 28 shots on goal to McKendree's 27. Sophomore goaltender Jazmin Malinowski turned aside 25 of the shots directed towards her for a save percentage of 0.893. Sutton notched her first career collegiate goal in the contest, and Peterson added her second assist in as many games at the Robert Morris Showcase.
McKendree is set for one more game at the Robert Morris University Showcase, which comes against No. 14 Robert Morris University at 1:10 p.m. at the Edge – West Rink in Chicago, Ill.
