(BLOOMINGTON, Ind., Feb. 25) – The McKendree University women's water polo team was unable to find a win this weekend, falling to No. 25 California Baptist University 20-2, No. 14 Indiana University 18-4, and Carthage College 8-7.
GAME ONE
On Friday evening McKendree took on the No. 25 team in Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Varsity, California Baptist University. The Bearcats were unable to score before half time, while the Lancers netted 11 goals. McKendree was able to score in the third quarter, when freshman attacker
Victoria Jones (Lodi, CA/Tokay High School) beat the Cal Baptist netminder. McKendree was able to find the back of the net in the fourth quarter as well, when junior attacker
Sabrina Sherrin (San Jose, CA/West Valley Junior College) rifled one in. McKendree's goals would not prove to be enough, as the Lancers defeated the Bearcats 20-2.
GAME TWO
Saturday morning the Bearcats matched up against Indiana University ranked No. 14 in CWPA Varsity. Sophomore
Jillian Hoffman (Prospect Heights, IL) was able to net one goal in the first quarter for the Bearcats, but they trailed 6-1 at the conclusion. The second quarter saw two more goals from the Bearcats, including a second goal from Hoffman and a marker from freshman attacker
Brianna Mullalley (Chula Vista, CA/Eastlake High School). The Bearcats trailed the Hoosiers 13-3 heading into half time. McKendree was held scoreless through the third quarter as Indiana scored four. In the fourth quarter, both teams were held to one goal each. The Bearcats goal came from the hands of Sherrin.
GAME THREE
McKendree played Carthage College in their final game of the weekend on Saturday evening. Mullalley found the back of the net in the first quarter for McKendree, but Carthage also netted a goal of their own to close out the first quarter tied 1-1. The Bearcats were held scoreless in the second quarter, but held the Lady Red's to just one goal. At the close of the second quarter McKendree was trailing Carthage 2-1. The Bearcats were able to score twice in the third quarter, both coming from Sherrin. However, the Lady Red's were able to score four in the quarter to take a 6-3 lead into the final quarter. McKendree came out hard in the fourth quarter scoring four times, Hoffman scored once, freshman attacker
Valerie Sorondo (Orlando, FL/Lake Nona High School) netted two, and Sherrin scored her third of the game. The Bearcats fourth quarter performance wasn't enough to overcome the Lady Red's, as they scored twice in the quarter to take an 8-7 victory over McKendree.
Leading the Bearcats in scoring over the weekend was Sherrin with five goals. Hoffman netted three goals on the weekend, including two in one game. Mullalley and Sorondo each netted two goals a piece, and Jones scored once.
McKendree is back in action March 3-4 at the Convergent Tournament in Claremont, Calif.
