McKendree Softball Goes 1-1 On Final Day Of Midwest Region Crossover

(EVANSVILLE, Ind., Feb. 26) – A ten hit effort helped lift McKendree 8-0 over Northwood University, in six innings, before the Bearcats would fall short against Hillsdale, 4-3. With the split, McKendree moves to 9-6 on the season.

Offensively, senior Brooke Gajewski (Kronenwetter, Wis./D.C. Everest) at the plate went 3-for-6 with a run and three RBI. Seniors Hanna Branch (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) and Rachel Hastings (Forsyth, Ill./Maroa-Forsyth ) both grabbed their third home run of season to lead all Bearcats.

Game One: McKendree 8, Northwood 0 // 6 innings

The Bearcats came out firing on all cylinders. Leading 3-0 after the second frame, Hanna Branch (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) would drive in all three runs with a two-run home run in the first followed by a RBI single in the second.

Both starting pitchers would hold strong the middle part of the game. Northwood had their best opportunity to score in the top of the sixth, but would strand both runners.

McKendree sealed the win plating six runs in the sixth. The scoring highlighted by Jamie Doggendorf (Dittmer, Mo./Northwest)'s two RBI single, Gajewski's two RBI single, and a RBI pinch-hit single by Allison Loehr (Glen Carbon, IL/Edwardsville ) gave McKendree their ninth win of the season.

Picking up her second shutout of the weekend, Holly Magre (Festus, Mo./St. Pius X) (6-2) picked up her sixth win of the season allowing just two hits while striking out six.

Game Two: Hillsdale 4, McKendree 3

McKendree would strike in the first with a two out RBI single for Rachel Hastings (Forsyth, Ill./Maroa-Forsyth ).

Hillsdale responded with a four-run second inning effort helping the Chargers jump on the Bearcats early and lead 4-1.

The Bearcats would get one back in the third with another two out RBI single, this time off the bat of Gajewski. Trying to complete the comeback effort McKendree cut the deficit down to 4-3 in the sixth as Rachel Hastings (Forsyth, Ill./Maroa-Forsyth ) recorded her third long ball of the season.

Allowing just two hits defensively the rest of the way was not enough as McKendree would go down in order in the seventh.

Freshman Hannah Murphy (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt North ) (0-2) would be handed the loss in the complete game effort, allowing two earned runs and one walk on top of six strikeouts.

McKendree will head west next weekend to participate in the Teri Mathis-Zenner Memorial Tournament at Missouri Southern State University on Saturday and Sunday.
