(LEBANON, Ill., Feb. 26) – The McKendree University women's lacrosse sqaud grabbed their first win of the 2017 season with a commanding 21-6 victory over Rockhurst University on Sunday, February 26.
Senior
Victoria Lelo (Auckland, New Zealand/Westlake) led the Bearcats in scoring, netting seven goals with one assist for eight points. Lelo also set a new McKendree women's lacrosse single-game record for draw controls with 11. Sophomore
Hannah Sugarman (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional ) scored five points with four goals and one assist, while
Paige Salthouse (St. Louis, MO/Ursuline Academy) added three goals.
The Bearcats led from the start, opening the match with three unanswered goals.
Rockhurst would respond with a goal cutting the Bearcat lead down to 3-1 with 23:50 left in the first half.
McKendree kept the high-powered offense going closing out the half on a 11-1 run, with four goals coming from Lelo and two from Sugarman.
Leading 14-2 at the half, McKendree picked up right where they left off, opening up the second half with three unanswered goals.
The teams would trade off scores in the final 15 minutes of the match with McKendree coming out on top 21-6.
In goal,
Amy Porta (Ellisville, MO/Marquette) picked up the win with five saves, while freshman
Collin Patton (Wildwood, MO/Eureka) made her McKendree debut in the second half collecting one save.
