(LEBANON, Ill., April 11)--For the first time in nearly 14 years, the McKendree University baseball team will square off against an NCAA Division I foe when the Bearcats make the short trip across the Mississippi River Tuesday to take on Saint Louis University. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at the Billiken Sports Center on the SLU campus.
Tuesday's game at Saint Louis was added late last week when both the Bearcats and Billikens had openings on their schedules due to weather postponements and cancellations earlier in the 2017 season. McKendree enters the game with an overall record of 10-21 following its record-setting performance in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader at the University of Indianapolis. The Bearcats established new NCAA Division II-era records for runs scored (28), hits (27) and runs in an inning (11) during its 28-5 victory over the No. 10-ranked Greyhounds. Six different Bearcats had at least three hits in the contest, including
Jay Roberts (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield North), who had two triples and a home run to go along with a career-high seven runs batted in at UIndy.
Saint Louis brings a 19-9 overall record into Tuesday's matchup. The Billikens split an Atlantic 10 Conference doubleheader Sunday at home against Fordham University. SLU rolled to a 10-0 win in the opener before dropping the second game, 7-1.
McKendree has not faced an NCAA Division I opponents since April 23, 2003, which also happened to come against Saint Louis. The Billikens Louis pushed across a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to walk away with a 7-6 triumph. McKendree is 12-22 all-time against SLU, with the Bearcats' last win coming back in the 1986 season.
Following Tuesday's contest at SLU, McKendree will head east for a four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series Friday and Saturday at the University of Southern Indiana. The Bearcats and Screaming Eagles will play doubleheaders each day, with first pitch set for noon.
