(LEBANON, Ill., Apr. 8) – The McKendree University women's water polo team fell to Mercyhurst University by a final score of 14-6 in their home opener on Saturday.
FIRST QUARTER
Mercyhurst took an early lead scoring the first goal of the game, but just over 30 seconds later McKendree freshman attacker
Brianna Mullalley (Chula Vista, CA/Eastlake High School) beat the Lakers goaltender with a shot to even up the score at one a side. The Lakers regained the lead with 3:05 to play in the first quarter, but Mullalley again responded with one of her own. The first quarter would then come to a close with the score tied 2-2.
SECOND QUARTER
The Lakers netted three goals before the Bearcats could answer to take a 5-2 lead. However, Mullalley scored her third of the game with just 2:13 left before halftime. Mercyhurst went on to score two more times to hold a 7-3 lead at the half.
THIRD QUARTER
The third quarter saw three goals by Mercyhurst before McKendree could score one of their own. Junior attacker
Sabrina Sherrin (San Jose, CA/West Valley Junior College) found the back of the net with just 23 seconds left in the quarter, to give the Bearcats some light before the close of the quarter. At the end of the third quarter, McKendree was trailing Mercyhurst by a score of 10-4.
FOURTH QUARTER
Mercyhurst was able to find the back of the net three times before McKendree could score. The Bearcats were able to score twice in the last minute of play with Mullalley scoring her fourth of the game and freshman attacker
Victoria Jones (Lodi, CA/Tokay High School) netting her first of the game. Mercyhurst was also able to score in the last minute, and would end up taking the 14-6 victory over McKendree.
Mullalley led the charge for the Bearcats in the game netting four goals, with Jones and Sherrin each netting one of their own in the contest.
The Bearcats are back in action on April 21
st at Indiana University, followed up by the CWPA Midwest Division Championship on April 22
nd and 23
rd at the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Ind.
