(Lebanon, Ill., May 4) – The McKendree University women's lacrosse team looks to clinch its first ever Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament title this weekend as the team faces off against the University of Indianapolis on Friday, May 5 at 8 p.m. ET.
The winner of the McKendree/Indianapolis game will play the winner of Grand Valley State University (GVSU)/Tiffin University game. The championship game is scheduled for first draw on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
The Bearcats
McKendree enters post-season play at 11-5 overall and 6-1 in conference play to earn a share of the regular season title. The Bearcat offensive unit is ranked nationally in scoring offense producing 16.25 goals per game. Behind this offensive explosion from McKendree is senior
Victoria Lelo (Auckland, New Zealand/Westlake) and junior
Dana DiPasquale (St. Charles, MO/Barat Academy). Lelo currently leads the GLIAC with 60 goals averaging 3.75 goals per game, which stands at tenth in the nation. DiPasquale also sits atop the conference in assists with 35.
Defensively,
Amy Porta (Ellisville, MO/Marquette) leads the conference in save percentage at 47.4%. Porta has stopped 130 shots this season securing 11 wins for the Bearcats, tying a season best. Lelo holds the conference lead in draw controls with 107 producing 6.69 draw controls per game, fourth best in the nation. The New Zealand native also leads the team in caused turnovers with 23.
The Greyhounds
Indianapolis heads into the weekend at 13-4 overall and 5-2 in GLIAC. The Greyhounds are second best in the conference averaging 14.29 goals per game. Chalane Morrison and Anna Rulapaugh lead the offensive unit producing 79 and 75 points respectively. Lauren Granville has seen majority of time between the pipes for the Greyhounds as she posts a 6-3 record on a 42.7% save percentage.
Last Meeting
Earlier this season, on April 15 the Bearcats traveled to Key Stadium on the campus of the University of Indianapolis which McKendree took a 12-10 victory. The game featured eight lead changes in which the Bearcats outshot the Greyhounds 22-21. Lelo paced the way for the Bearcats on four goals, while Grace Gunneson netted five.
Hannah Sugarman (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional ) scored the go-ahead goal with 2:09 remaining in the match to take an 11-10 lead and
Bree Suter (Westminster, MD/Winters Mill) netted a man down goal in the final 0:39 seconds to cap the victory for the Bearcats.
