(Lebanon, Ill., September 2) – The McKendree University men's soccer team opened the 2017 campaign by defeating Fort Hays State University, the No. 11 ranked team in the nation, 3-1 this evening.
Two minutes and three seconds into the contest the nationally ranked tigers showed their might as they netted a goal on the Bearcats to gain a 1-0 lead. McKendree would not back down however shutting out Fort Hays in the final 88 minutes of play.
The Bearcats came out in the second half hot as
Gonzalo Correa (Santiago, Chile/Athletic Study Center) struck gold off a crossing ball from teammate
Alec Waller (Columbia, IL/Columbia ) to tie the game at 1-1.
In the 86 minute of play, Correa would find the back of the net again on a
Callum Kiddell (Auckland, New Zealand/Mount Albert ) cross. 59 seconds later,
Blake Johnson (St. Louis, MO/Oakville Sr. ) joined the scoring party on a one more pass from
Fredrik Hansen (Oslo, Norway/Persbraaten Videregaaende Skole) to ice the 3-1 lead.
In goal for the Bearcats was
Ian Bender (Edwardsville, IL/Scott Gallagher Academy). The sophomore gathered three saves on four shots faced.
The men's soccer team is back in action on Sunday, September 10 as they host University of Missouri-St. Louis for a 2:30 p.m. contest
