(LEBANON, Ill., Jan. 10)--The McKendree University men's basketball team will remain in Great Lakes Valley Conference Central Division play this weekend with a pair of contests. The Bearcats will entertain Maryville University Thursday evening before heading west to visit the University of Missouri-St. Louis Saturday afternoon.
Both games will be carried live on the Bearcat Sports Network at
www.glvcsn.com/mckendree. Thursday's game will have a live video feed on the BSN, with Kent Zimmerman providing the play-by-play call.
Scott Cummings will handle the audio-only broadcast of Saturday's contest at UMSL. Both games will start with a 10-minute pre-game show.
McKendree will be looking to bounce back into the win column following a pair of setbacks last week in GLVC play. The Bearcats were defeated last Thursday at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside 75-65 before the University of Illinois Springfield posted an 86-72 win over McKendree last Saturday at the Harry M. Statham Sports Center. McKendree is now 10-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play. The two setbacks marked the first back-to-back losses in the 2017-18 season for the Bearcats.
As he has for most of 2017-18, Justin Blanks leads the GLVC in scoring at 20.4 PPG. Malcolm Mabry holds down the No. 4 spot in the league in rebounding as he is pulling down 9.4 RPG. Nolan Gerling continues to rank in the top 10 in the conference in field goal percentage, sitting ninth overall at 61 percent. Giovanni Offard is seventh in the GLVC in assists per game at 3.8 while he is tied for seventh in steals per game at 1.6. Gianni Otto ranks fourth in the league in steals per contest at 1.7.
Nate Michael (pictured) is the closest Bearcat to the 1,000-point club. Michael, who is second on the team in scoring at 13 PPG, needs 64 points to become the 51st player in program history to reach the milestone. Former teammate Michael Jackson was the most recent McKendree player to reach 1,000 career points, hitting the mark last January 26 at Lewis University.
Among team statistical leaders in the GLVC, McKendree is second overall in rebounding (41.4 RPG). The Bearcats are third in the conference in scoring offense (86.2 PPG), scoring margin (+15.1 PPG), rebounding margin (+9.2 RPG) and steals (7.6 SPG).
Following Saturday's game at UMSL, McKendree will have just two days to prepare for its second and final meeting of the 2017-18 season against Illinois Springfield. The Bearcats and Prairie Stars will face off on Monday in Springfield, Ill.
ABOUT MARYVILLE
The Saints are 11-3 overall and 3-2 in the GLVC under the direction of first-year head coach Marc Stricker. Maryville is a perfect 8-0 at home so far this season, but just 3-3 away from Moloney Arena. Nolan Berry, the Saints' leading scorer in 2017-18, ranks fourth among all GLVC players at 18.5 PPG. Berry is also third in the league in rebounding at 9.9 RPG. In addition, he is fifth in the GLVC in field goal percentage, knocking down 65.8 percent of his tries. For good measure, Berry leads the league in blocked shots with 23 and blocks per game at 1.6. Robin Thompson complements Berry on both ends of the floor as he is second on the Saints' squad in both scoring (13 PPG) and rebounding (7.4 RPG). Jimmy Barton has 67 assists to lead Maryville and ranks second in the GLVC in assists per game at 4.8.
McKendree won last year's meeting against Maryville, 79-73, which took place on Feb. 2, 2017 at the Statham Center. David Franklin led all players with 27 points and 11 rebounds to show the way for the Bearcats, while Michael Jackson added 22 points.
ABOUT UMSL
The Tritons bring a 7-6 season record and a 2-2 league mark into their Thursday match-up at Illinois Springfield. UMSL has dropped three of its last four contests, including an 84-73 decision last Thursday at the University of Southern Indiana. Three different Tritons are scoring in double figures this season, led by Steven Davis at 12.8 PPG. Johnathan Matthews is next at 11.9 PPG, followed by Elijah Watson at 10.8 PPG. Watson leads the GLVC in assists per game at 5.6 APG. Davis sits third in the league in three-point field goals made per game at 3.0.
