(LEBANON, Ill., Jan. 15)--The McKendree University women's basketball team will look to complete a season sweep of the University of Illinois Springfield when the Bearcats head north Monday evening to take on the Prairie Stars. Tip-off between McKendree and UIS is set for 5:30 p.m. at The Recreation and Athletic Complex (TRAC) on the Prairie Stars' campus.
McKendree enters Monday's game with an overall record of 6-7 while sitting at 2-4 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. The Bearcats will look to rebound back into the win column following a 63-55 loss Saturday afternoon at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. McKendree led 40-30 late in the third quarter before the host Tritons rallied with a 24-3 run to take the lead for good. Jordan Heberg led the scoring attack for the Bearcats with 15 points, while Sydney Diekhoff registered 11 points off the bench. Jordan Morton added eight points and a team-best 11 rebounds for the Bearcats, who held a 39-35 edge on the boards over UMSL.
Monday's game at UIS will mark the second meeting between the Bearcats and Prairie Stars in nine days. Back on Jan. 6 at the Harry M. Statham Sports Center, McKendree built a 20-point lead in the third quarter and held off a late charge from UIS to post a 79-72 win. Heberg headed a list of four Bearcats who scored in double figures with 19 points, while Morton and Callie Pohlman each connected for 14 points in the win. Morton notched a double-double in the game as she hauled in a game-high 12 rebounds.
This will also be the Bearcats' lone GLVC game to be played on a Monday. The remainder of the 2017-18 GLVC schedule will be contested in its usual Thursday-Saturday format. The 2018 GLVC Tournament will take place March 1-4 at the Vadalabene Center on the campus of SIUE in Edwardsville, Ill.
Following the short trip to UIS, McKendree will return home to begin a three-game home stand on Thursday against GLVC Central Division foe Quincy University. Tip-off will be at 5:30 p.m. inside the Statham Center. The Bearcats will then have a week off before hosting William Jewell College on Jan. 25.
ABOUT ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD
The Prairie Stars are 10-4 on the year and 4-2 in GLVC play. After falling to McKendree on Jan. 6, UIS has rebounded with victories at home over UMSL on Thursday and at Quincy on Saturday. In the 81-64 win at Quincy, Destiny Ramsey posted a double-double with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Shelbi Patterson netted 17 points and dished out seven assists while Jasmine Sangster came off the bench to add 16 points.
For the season, Ramsey leads UIS in both scoring (13.9 PPG) and rebounding (8.1 RPG). Patterson (13 PPG) and Sangster (10.2 PPG) are the other Prairie Stars averaging in double figures. Patterson also leads the team with 37 assists.
In the first meeting against McKendree, Chasitee Shroyer and Brianna Mefford came off the bench to lead UIS with 12 points each. Ramsey and Patterson each chipped in with 11 points. Mefford also pulled down a team-best five rebounds while Patterson handed out six assists.
