(ST. LOUIS, MO, Oct 14) – The McKendree University men's soccer team topped the Saints of Maryville University Sunday afternoon 3-2 in an intense double overtime battle. The Bearcats improve to 8-4-1 overall and 6-3-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC).
The Bearcats were out-shot by the Saints 10 to four, however McKendree found the back of the net on all of their on-goal attempts. The Bearcats struck first in the 27
th minute after junior defender
Javier Soto (Santiago, Chile/) scored off an assist from
Matthew Moran (Perryville, MO/Perryville High School). Maryville answered back quickly with a goal in the 30
th minute to tie the game 1-1, however sophomore striker
Raul Artega (Pachuca, Hidalgo, Mexico) netted a 30-yard ball off a failed Maryville clearing pass, reclaiming the lead for McKendree before the end of the first half. Maryville would score the only goal of the second half in the 59
th minute and send the conference match into overtime, where just two minutes into the second overtime period sophomore midfielder
Eddie Davis (Arundel, England/Amersham College) would score his second game-winner of the weekend on a breakaway set up by
Ryan Herling (Belleville, IL/Belleville West). Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper
Alvaro Cortazar (Asuncion, Paraguay/Santa Teresa de Jesus) collected six saves in a winning effort.
The men's soccer team will return to action Friday, October 19 at 7:30 p.m. as they host fellow GLVC competitor Truman State.
