(LEBANON, Ill., Oct 24) – The McKendree University men's soccer team topped the Tritons of the University of Missouri-St. Louis 1-0 in their final game before the GLVC tournament playoffs. The Bearcats earn their 10th win of the season and become 10-5-1 overall and 8-4-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) play.
Prior to kick-off, the Bearcats honored senior
Luke Schlichting (Perryville, MO/Perryville High School) before he played his final game on Leemon Field.
In an intense 90 minutes, McKendree just edged out the Tritons in shots, taking 11 to UMSL's 10. The Bearcats would be first and only team to score after freshman defender
Jett Gay (Springfield, IL/Glenwood High School) redirected a deflected ball into the back of the net in the 33
rd minute of play. Both teams continued for the remainder of the match to extend the score-line, however the final score would stand 1-0 in favor of McKendree through full regulation time. Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper
Alvaro Cortazar (Asuncion, Paraguay/Santa Teresa de Jesus) made two saves while collecting his seventh shutout of the year.
The men's soccer team will return to action this Sunday at 1 p.m. as they travel to the University of Illinois Springfield to battle the Prairie Stars in the GLVC tournament quarterfinals. This is the first tournament bid in men's soccer program history after joining the league in 2012. To see the full GLVC tournament bracket,
