(SPRINGFIELD, Ill., Oct 28) – The McKendree University men's soccer team exploded offensively in their first GLVC post-season win in program history, defeating the Prairie Stars of Illinois Springfield 3-0.
McKendree notched their first playoff goal just before the halftime break after
Gonzalo Correa (Santiago, Chile/Athletic Study Center) scored within the Prairie Star goalie box in the 44
th minute of play, assisted by
James Stone (Eastbourne, England/Bede's Senior School) and
Eddie Davis (Arundel, England/Amersham College). In the 63
rd minute, Bearcat forward
Raul Artega (Pachuca, Hidalgo, Mexico) would extend the McKendree lead to 2-0 after he scored off a post shot rebound courtesty of
Javier Soto (Santiago, Chile/). The third goal and nail in the coffin came compliments of forward
James Stone (Eastbourne, England/Bede's Senior School) who rocketed a penalty shot past the UIS goalkeeper. Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper
Alvaro Cortazar (Asuncion, Paraguay/Santa Teresa de Jesus) made four saves while collecting his eighth shutout of the year.
The men's soccer team will continue their path towards the GLVC title this Friday, November 2 at 12 p.m. E.T. as they travel to Jeffersonville, Indiana to battle the Bellarmine Knights in the GLVC tournament semifinals. To see the full GLVC tournament bracket, click
